A grunion run is a fascinating natural phenomenon in which California grunion, a small silvery fish, come ashore in massive numbers to spawn on sandy beaches during high tides at night. Females ride the waves onto the beach, wriggling tail-first into the sand to lay eggs.
The males wrap around them to fertilize the eggs externally. The fish then return to the ocean, often flopping frantically as waves retreat.
The eggs incubate in the sand for about 10 days, hatching when they’re washed out by the next high tide. female grunion can spawn multiple times in a single season—typically four to eight times.
Each spawning event is timed with the high tides around the full and new moons, which occur approximately every two weeks. During these runs, a female can lay up to 3,000 eggs per event, and over the course of the season, she may lay tens of thousands of eggs in total.
Grunion are highly adapted to this precise tidal rhythm, and the repeat spawning strategy increases the odds of reproductive success in their challenging intertidal environment.
Why does his reproductive strategy work?
It protects eggs from aquatic predators.
It times hatching with a strong tide that quickly disperses larvae into the ocean.
It allows the species to take advantage of predictable lunar and tidal cycles.
