A year ago, Captain Smit Machchhar was asked what mattered more — a smooth landing or an on-time arrival.
His answer was simple: “None. Safe.”
A year later, after being attacked by his co-pilot during a flight, he kept the cockpit door open, allowing passengers to intervene and stop the hijacking.
The aircraft landed safely, with all 174 passengers accounted for.
“Safe” was never just a priority. It was the job.

Aviation🚨The passengers of Flydubai FZ1073 have arrived safely back in Israel after being flown home on another Flydubai flight from Saudi Arabia, where the aircraft made an emergency landing following the incident.
About half a day after taking off from Dubai for Tel Aviv, the 174 passengers of flight FZ1073 including 27 children, have all returned to Israel.
Some of the Israelis were reportedly initially unwilling to board another flight operated by the Emirati airline but were persuaded after being told there was no alternative, and after Saudi Arabia refused to authorize an Israeli rescue flight.
What happened aboard that flight demanded extraordinary courage. Welcome home to Israel’s newest heroes. 🇮🇱

Israel - Dubai 🇮🇱
FZ1073, a flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after a violênt cockpit incident.
What is currently reported:
The aircraft was carrying roughly 180 passengers, mostly Israelis.
The co pilot, reported to be Omani, allegedly àtt@cked the captain and attempted to take control of the aircraft. Israeli officials said they were investigating whether the intention was to cr@sh the plane.
Flight-tracking data showed an extremely rapid descent—reports put it at roughly 14,000–17,000 feet within less than a minute—before the aircraft recovered.
Passengers and crew intervened, and other pilots who were travelling as passengers reportedly helped take control. The plane subsequently landed safely at Tabuk.
Flydubai has officially confirmed that an “altercation occurred in the flight deck” and said its crew secured the aircraft and diverted it safely. The airline has cautioned that the underlying motive remains under formal investigation.
Several Indian outlets are reporting that the captain was Indian national Smit Machchhar, a former SpiceJet pilot. However, there is some inconsistency in early reporting: The Times of Israel initially described the captain as Emirati, while other Israeli and Indian reports identify him as Indian. His identity should therefore be treated as reported rather than definitively confirmed by authorities at this stage.
So the headline “Indian Captain fought off co-pilot’s alleged mid-air attempt to crash” captures the current reporting, but the exact sequence of events, motive, and identities are still being investigated.

During the September 30, 2026 mid-air attack aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, injured Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar fought off his knife-wielding co-pilot and unlocked the cockpit door, enabling four Israeli passengers—Yaniv Hayun (Hayon), Asaf Rajuan (Redjuan), Tzvika Manes, and dentist Dr. Shota Musaev—to rush the flight deck and save everyone on board. Hayun choked the attacker, pulled him from the controls, and briefly stabilized the diving aircraft before off-duty pilots took over, later stating, "I watch 'Air Crash Investigation,' so I pulled the controls and the plane began to level out." Simultaneously, Rajuan and Manes overpowered the suspect and bound him using headphone cables and zip ties for 55 minutes until the aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia; recalling the struggle, Rajuan said, "Life is stronger than everything, and we decided to fight for it," while Manes remarked, "It was a very difficult scenario, but because we're Israelis, so we responded quickly." Meanwhile, Dr. Musaev treated Captain Machchhar's severe head and hand wounds, stating, "By the time I got there, the pilot was already on the floor. He had lost a lot of blood. We had to stop the bleeding. We managed to stabilise him, stabilise his blood pressure."
