Top 5 Mistakes Patients Make with Supplements
(From a nutrition specialist who has worked with #supplements both in practice and with industry.)
Supplements can be incredibly helpful when used correctly—but there are a few mistakes I see patients make over and over again.
1. No one is doing the math
Always look at the actual ingredient panel, not just the front of the bottle. Many people take multiple supplements that contain overlapping nutrients (for example B vitamins, magnesium, or zinc) without realizing the total daily dose. Adding up the milligrams or micrograms across products helps avoid unnecessary excess and ensures you are taking an evidence-based amount.
2. Forgetting to count powders and drink mixes
Powders, greens blends, electrolyte mixes, and protein drinks often contain added #vitamins and #minerals. Patients frequently overlook these when calculating their daily intake. Those hidden nutrients can significantly contribute to your total daily dose.
3. Timing matters more than people think
Certain nutrients can influence energy, metabolism, or sleep physiology. For example, B-vitamins or stimulating adaptogens may be better tolerated earlier in the day, while nutrients that support relaxation or sleep may be better taken in the evening. Thoughtful timing can improve tolerance and effectiveness.
4. With food or without food matters
Some vitamins are water-soluble and absorbed well on an empty stomach, while others are fat-soluble and require dietary fat for optimal absorption. Taking nutrients like vitamin D, vitamin E, carotenoids, or omega-3s with meals can significantly improve #bioavailability. Understanding this small detail can make supplements work much better.
5. Not telling your healthcare professional
One of the most common safety issues I see is incomplete supplement disclosure. #Nutrients can interact with medications, affect laboratory values, or overlap with prescribed therapies. Always share your full supplement list so your healthcare team can guide safe and coordinated care.
Supplements can be powerful tools—but only when used thoughtfully and transparently.
If you’re taking supplements without knowing what your body actually needs…this is your sign stop 👀🛑
Just because someone online swears by it doesn’t mean your body needs it.

How have YOU failed when taking supplements???
Please tell us in the comments!!
You don’t “feel amazing” if you’re taking 8+ supplements a day long term….
You’re just a glorified drug dealer. Health isn’t sold in a bottle.
How have YOU done supplements badly???
Please share 😂👇
Spoke to a client this week who’s been taking supplements for years… and no one has ever explained how her body actually absorbs them 🤯
Not when to take them
Not what impacts absorption
Not what cancels things out
Not what she actually needs
Just… “take this”
And this is the problem
Because your body isn’t a bin where you just throw supplements in and hope for the best
Absorption changes depending on:
Your digestion
Your hormones
Your gut health
Your stress levels
Even things like surgeries, medications and conditions
So you can be spending money on all the “right” things…
And still not feeling any different
Not because they don’t work
But because they’re not being used properly
There ARE ways to improve absorption
There ARE combinations that work better
There ARE things you should avoid taking together
But most women are never taught this
So they keep guessing… and staying stuck
If you want to actually understand what your body needs and how to take supplements properly…

Many people assume that supplements are safe and simple - but they actually command just as much thoughtfulness and caution as prescription medications (in my trained opinion!).
Like medications, most supplements have an optimal and sub-optimal way of taking them, including form, dose, and timing! Like meds, supplements can also interact with eachother, foods and drinks, and medications, and it is crucial to be aware of these interactions!
While medications are regulated by the FDA, supplements are not, so you want to be sure you are getting supplements from a reputable, third party tested source. Each supplement should have a specific purpose; if you want guidance, discuss with your doctor (particularly physicians with extra training in Integrative Medicine and nutrition).
