Everyone thinks a career in food starts and ends in the kitchen. But that’s far from the truth. Food Photography is one of the most exciting careers in the industry. Every restaurant menu, café campaign, cookbook, and food brand needs someone who can tell a story through images. If you love food but don’t see yourself working in a commercial kitchen, this could be the perfect path for you. I’m starting a series where I break down different careers in the food industry that deserve more attention. 💬 Have questions about food photography or want to know how to get started? My DMs are always open. 📌 Save this for later and follow along because in the next episode, we’re talking about Food Writing. . #foodcareers #foodphotography #foodphotographer #foodjobs #foodeducation

Writing a cookbook isn’t just about putting together a set of recipes. It’s so much more—cultural commentary, community documentation, a sign of the times it was written in. Almost always guided by a personal story, a cookbook is not just for the kitchen. Sharing this as I review applications to my Mentorship Program in Long Form Food Writing—so excited to read about all your book ideas! If you’re toying with the idea of writing a cookbook or food memoir, please don’t abandon the idea—it means much more than you’ll know! #cookbook #foodwriting #mentorship
If you’ve ever wanted to learn what it’s like to write a restaurant review, this Food Writing course at @riceuniversity is for you! As the former James Beard Award-nominated food critic for the Houston Press and Houstonia Magazine, I’ll be teaching restaurant criticism and more in this two-day Saturday workshop September 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On September 19, Phoenicia will be catering while we delve into the history of food writing, how to craft prose that incorporates the senses and why food is a lens onto culture. On September 26, we’ll discuss readings by such iconic critics as Jonathan Gold, Pete Wells, AA Gill and, yes, Marilyn Hagerty, before you take a lunch trip to write your own restaurant review. The link to learn more about or register for the workshop is in my bio, and I’m happy to answer any questions you have about the course or food writing/restaurant reviewing in general. Hope to see y’all at @ricecontinuingstudies soon!
