The Forbidden City: The Imperial Palace of Beijing. A massive symmetrical royal complex laid out according to ancient Chinese principles thousands of years old. The home of the emperor and the dragon throne. The heart of the Chinese empire, the physical expression of the Mandate of Heaven. The Mongols established their empire and dynasty on this spot in the 13th Century. The Ming who replaced them would come to make this their capital too in around 1400 and it remained the heart of Imperial China for the next 400 years until the fall of the empire itself. Finally walked the grounds of Tiananmen Square and the majestic Forbidden City. Impossible to stand here without feeling the weight of millennia. The sheer scale of the Ming and Qing dynasties’ imperial residence was breathtaking.. (Ithouses 980 buildings across 720,000 square meters.) Also learnt that The Forbidden City was the imperial palace for 24 emperors over 491 years. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Mulan, hehe. Walking from one gate to another was indeed a marathon, not a sprint. I definitely would have needed that extra dose of stamina. The initial awe quickly turned into a personal endurance test! 😆 On a personal note: Walking from the south end of the square through the entire palace grounds was indeed a long journey. The sun was unexpectedly intense, though on a chilly day, leading to a state of being utterly “kusut”. Got so cranky from fatigue and sweat, and also the fact that I couldn’t use my tripod in the end 😂. Reminder to self: Imperial scale means Imperial walking distances. But what a view! Also pro tip: Leave the tripod at home, they are prohibited.
