HUNTING, MINING, AND BIOSOURCING.
a+t 62. Frugality Series. linktr.ee/aplust_architecture
In the contemporary context, concepts such as ‘component hunting’, ‘urban mining’, and ‘bio-sourced materials’ do not merely denote technical strategies. Rather, they articulate ways of reconfiguring the relationship between architecture, materiality, and productive processes.
Their significance lies not in the novelty of the terminology, but in their capacity to erode inherited models of modern design, shifting the architectural focus towards an active engagement with resources, their cycles, and material trajectories.
In this third issue of the FRUGALITY series —a critical response to the demands of the environmental agenda— ‘component hunting’, ‘urban mining’, and ‘bio-sourced materials’- challenge the notion of architecture as a finite object, advancing instead a material ethic in which design becomes an act of negotiation, translation, and ecological and economic commitment.
Re:Ground
Between what remains and what becomes
—
An architectural reflection on memory and material.
Re:Ground explores the intersection between decay and renewal — how what once stood tall can return to the earth, reshaped and reimagined. Through layering and light, the installation redefines the boundary between surface and depth, material and memory. Drawing upon the material sensibilities of @panelinc.id and @almaflor.id , the piece becomes a quiet gesture — a reminder that grounding is not about standing still, but about returning to where new life begins.

This project is structured through a clear and legible spatial hierarchy, as expressed through this diagram.
A rectilinear mass establishes order and anchors the plan, while a central atrium becomes the spatial and environmental core—bringing in light, enabling ventilation, and visually connecting the different levels of the home.
At the ground plane, the built form dissolves into courtyards, creating seamless indoor–outdoor transitions and extending the living experience into landscape.
As the building rises, the mass is carefully fragmented through terraces and roof gardens, softening its scale while enhancing usability and engagement with the outdoors.
The infinity pool is strategically aligned along the edge, elongating sightlines and reinforcing a sense of openness beyond the built boundary.
Pergolas and façade fins are introduced as unifying elements—modulating light, ensuring privacy, and establishing a rhythmic architectural language across the elevation.
What ultimately binds the project is not just its formal expression, but the relational logic between its parts—light responding to volume, movement transitioning into pause, interior merging with exterior.
A composition where planning is not imposed, but intuitively experienced.

MORPHOSIS
Morphosis is an experimental installation that transforms discarded paper into a living spatial system. Developed through research into paper waste and the cultivation of microgreens on paper substrates, the project explores how growth, decay, and material reuse can coexist within an architectural framework.
Slender metal frames hold hand-formed paper branches, returning paper into a form embedded within its memory. As visitors move through the structure, light filters through layers of fragments, creating shifting spatial conditions.
Over time greenery takes root and spreads across the surface, allowing the installation to evolve as a living dialogue between waste, craft, and ecological renewal.

RESOURCES AND FINESSE.
a+t 61. Frugality Series. linktr.ee/aplust_architecture
The combination of architectural resources with creative finesse defines our proposal for this edition of the FRUGALITY series —a critical response to the demands of the environmental agenda. These are cost-free mechanisms, rooted in pure intellectual reflection. The absence of superfluous elements results in objects stripped of cladding and unnecessary layers. Simple yet intentional constructions embrace the pseudo-craftsmanship of industrialised assembly, transforming it into a personalised pattern that imbues the final outcome with a distinct identity.
The Contemporary Home architecture competition_
Exploring the Future of Living_
The "Contemporary Home" is one of the exciting themes explored through the partnership between Buildner and ArchDaily. This theme examines modern living's complexities, focusing on how architecture and design can adapt and innovate to cater to the changing needs and preferences of society. Through this collaborative effort, we aimed to explore various facets of contemporary living.
"The home is no longer a static container. It is a fluid, wind-carved ecosystem that prioritizes the human spirit and the natural environment over the rigid geometry of the past."

How do we bridge the gap between intention and execution in sustainable design?
Over the past couple of months, we’ve spoken with practicing architects who all agree that healthy, sustainable design is vital. Yet, the reality of our daily practice is frustrating.
Our biggest barrier isn’t a lack of desire, it’s crushing time pressure and fragmented data. When sustainable alternatives are hard to find, healthy design is perceived as a risky “luxury,” and conventional choices win by default.
𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀.
We need to start with 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 based on what is actually available, spec-ready, and proven to work.
🚀 This is why 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗳𝗳 is officially launched!
BuildBetterStuff makes sustainable specification fast, proven, and viable by combining actionable material data, direct supplier access, and real-world case studies.
What is the platform?
• 𝟱𝟬 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀: Spec-ready, low-carbon, healthier and more sustainable alternatives to conventional materials.
• 𝟭𝟯 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀: Real-world examples to gain client confidence and protect your ideas from value engineering.
For a limited time, we are currently inviting a small group of practices to access our beta for free.

Buildings That Breathe
What if our walls didn’t just stand there — but actively cleaned the air?
In London, Alive Labs is developing living moss panels that transform buildings into environmental assets. These bio-receptive systems can be installed both indoors and outdoors, turning vertical surfaces into working green infrastructure.
Unlike decorative green walls, these moss panels are designed for performance.
They help:
🌫️ Capture air pollutants and improve urban air quality
🌍 Absorb carbon dioxide as part of living building surfaces
🌡️ Regulate temperature through natural insulation
🌧️ Retain and absorb rainwater, reducing runoff
🦋 Support biodiversity in dense city environments
As cities expand and climate pressures grow, buildings can no longer be passive structures. They must become part of the solution.
Living architecture like this reimagines concrete surfaces as climate tools — cooling streets, filtering air, and restoring fragments of nature to urban landscapes.
Green buildings are not just about energy efficiency anymore. They’re about resilience, regeneration, and reconnecting cities with ecosystems.
The future of architecture may not just be smart — it may be alive.
