A few weeks ago we really enjoyed the Living History weekend at Fort Macon State Park. They had artillery/musket demonstrations, and guided tours of the restored 1834 fort. Featuring costumed interpreters, weekend reenactments by groups like the 45th Massachusetts Regiment. While we were there, they fired 8 cannons. This State Park is free to visit. Has hiking trails, beach access (no swimming) and has museum style exhibits. While they only do the Living History weekend about once per year, you can still enjoy all this park has to offer year-around. #statepark #explorenc #northcarolina #beach #history

Today was a fantastic day as we toured the historic General Washington's House Mt Vernon in Fairfax County, Virginia. This iconic landmark transported us back in time as we explored the 8,000-acre estate, met Washington's personal secretary, Madam Martha Washington, and interacted with the soldiers guarding the property. We also had the opportunity to travel along the Potomac River, both north and south, and gained insight into Washington's fort.

Step back in time in Raymond, Mississippi 🤍 Founded in 1829, this historic town became a key stop near the Natchez Trace and later played a powerful role in the Civil War during the 1863 Battle of Raymond. Today, its preserved courthouse, churches, and historic homes tell a story of resilience, heritage, and small-town Southern pride that still stands strong. #RaymondMS #travel #civilwar #history #exploring
This is what a Revolutionary War redoubt, like the one at Fort Nonsense, may have looked like. 🇺🇸 While the exact design of Fort Nonsense is unknown, archaeologists have uncovered the stone outline of the structure, confirming it was a defensive earthwork built to protect George Washington and his troops. This example here at @valleyforgepark shows a reconstructed redoubt, typically made of earth, logs, and trenches, often reinforced with cannons to defend key positions during the Revolutionary War. Even if soldiers once called it “nonsense,” these fortifications played a real role in securing American positions. 🪨✨ #america250 #valleyforge #fortnonsense #morristown #morriscountynj
