Most founders walk into rooms looking for comfort.
People they already know.
People operating at the same level.
Conversations that feel familiar.
But that day in the meeting, a founder sitting next to me said something simple:
“Your business grows to match the standard you are willing to operate at.”
And suddenly a lot of things made sense.
Why some founders stay stuck at the same level for years.
Why some founders scale much faster than everyone around them.
It is rarely just talent.
It is exposure.
When everyone around you is firefighting daily, that feels like business.
When everyone around you is thinking in systems and leverage, your brain recalibrates.
Different conversations.
Different problems.
Different level of thinking.
You start noticing things like:
↳ How they talk about money without hesitation
↳ How quickly they move from decision to execution
↳ How they think in leverage instead of effort
↳ How they treat time as their most expensive resource
Your standard shifts quietly.
And then your business follows.
I see this pattern constantly in the founders I work with.
The moment they start operating at a higher standard - in decisions, pricing, time and thinking - their business begins to change with them.
Which is why the rooms you put yourself in matter more than most people realise.
The right people do not just inspire you.
They raise the floor of what you believe is normal.
And once your floor rises, your ceiling becomes a completely different conversation.
So here is the real question:
What standard are you actually operating at right now?

📌 I’m opening 2 strategy conversations this month for founders who feel like their business has plateaued despite working hard.
Sometimes the shift is not effort.
It is perspective.
📩 If you want to look at your business through a sharper lens, send me “STRATEGY.”
We’ll take it from there.

Most founders don’t realize they’re the constraint.
Not because they lack strategy.
But because they’re still operating from the identity that built the last level.
That’s what keeps them as the glue instead of the owner.
The shift isn’t operational.
It’s becoming the owner.
With that shift, the business becomes an asset that creates value beyond them.
Most founders don’t fail because they lack intelligence.
They fail because they outgrow their own playbook.
In my latest conversation with Deb Coviello @dropinceo, she broke this down brutally well.
Most founders are exceptional at one thing:
👉 Bringing in customers
👉 Closing deals
👉 Hustling their way to early traction
But then something shifts.
The business grows.
The team expands.
Complexity kicks in.
And suddenly… the same founder who built the business
doesn’t know how to scale it.
Not because they’re not capable —
but because they were never taught how to build strategy.
Deb shared how she faced this herself.
She had to step back and ask:
“What does a real strategy even look like?”
“What’s the roadmap?”
“How do I lead a team instead of just driving results myself?”
And here’s the uncomfortable truth 👇
The playbook that got you here
will not get you there.
Yet most founders hold onto it.
Why?
Because it worked.
Because there’s pride attached to it.
Because letting go feels like losing control.
But scaling demands evolution.
New playbook.
New thinking.
New people.
Sometimes, external perspective.
If you’re feeling stuck right now, it’s not your effort that’s the problem.
It’s the system you’re operating on.
So the real question is:
Are you still running your startup on yesterday’s playbook?
Or are you ready to build the one that actually scales?

The biggest mistake I see early founders make is trying to do too much too soon.
I know because I made it myself. Growing too quickly, scaling too fast, and then running out of money before the model was even proven.
The founders I admire most are the ones who bootstrap, test, prove the model works, and copy what is already working elsewhere before they even think about scaling.
Speed feels like progress. But doing too much too early is one of the most common reasons promising businesses never make it.

Many founders don’t realise when this starts happening.
A quick review here.
Stepping in to fix something there.
Approving every decision.
Rechecking work that was already delegated.
Slowly, without noticing, the founder becomes the system.
And that’s usually the moment we know the business doesn’t have a people problem.
Because if the founder is the system,
the business can’t scale.
30-Second Founder Mindset Shift
Most founders polish pitch decks.
Great slides. Perfect narratives.
But teams don’t follow slides.
They follow where founders spend their time.
Your calendar tells the truth.
1️⃣ Strategy isn’t explained.
It’s demonstrated through time.
Where leadership shows up becomes the signal.
2️⃣ Attention creates gravity.
What founders repeatedly focus on becomes the company’s priority.
3️⃣ Teams watch behavior.
Meetings. Reviews. Hiring.
Direction becomes clear through presence.
4️⃣ Founder attention is the rarest startup resource.
Every hour communicates importance.
5️⃣ A personal lesson:
When I redesigned my calendar,
clarity returned across the company.
Same team. Different focus.
Everything changed.
📌 Takeaway:
Strategy is rarely announced.
It is scheduled.
Quick exercise:
Open your calendar.
Does it reflect the company you want to build?
What takes most of your attention right now?

Most founders think they’re burned out.
More often, they’re experiencing identity friction.
The founder who built the business isn’t the one required to scale it.
That friction shows up in predictable patterns long before momentum disappears.
Which one is creating your growth ceiling right now?
The Founder Type Series: 1 / 5
One thing I’ve noticed working with founders is that there isn’t one ‘right’ way to run a business — but there are clear patterns in how people approach it.
This is first in this series breaking down the 4 types I see most often.
also, I might be in a meeting before you text back 😂
one thing nobody tells you when you start a business - your relationship with time completely changes.
you become obsessed with how you spend it.
who you spend it with.
whether the hour you just gave away actually moved something forward.
It’s not a bad thing. It’s actually one of the most important shifts you can make as a founder. Because the people who build something real aren’t the ones who are the busiest. They’re the ones who are the most intentional.

Founders don’t just build businesses, we build standards.
And just like mine, YOUR business will only grow as much as the founder behind it.
If you’re raising the standard in your own business this year, I’d love to hear what that looks like.
And if you want support thinking through strategy, structure, or visibility, that’s exactly the work I do with my clients.
One of the most common things I hear from founders is this:
“The business is working, but everything still runs through me.”
Clients are coming in and the work is strong, but every project, decision and operational detail still depends on one person remembering how everything fits together.
That works for a while, but eventually the business grows faster than one person can comfortably carry.
Where in your business do things still rely on you more than they should?
Send me a message if this feels familiar.

Most founders don’t need a roadmap.
They need the next 2 steps.
Here’s what I’ve seen after years of working with founders across the room and across the world —
The ones who stay stuck aren’t lacking strategy.
They’re waiting for certainty before they move.
But certainty is a lie we tell ourselves.
The real framework is simpler than you think.
✦ Step 01 — Move.
Take the very next step. Not all of them. Just one.
✦ Step 02 — Gain Clarity.
The path doesn’t appear before you move.
It appears because you moved.
That’s the whole thing.
I don’t hand founders a 47-slide deck.
I give them the next 2 steps — and the courage to take them.
Because here’s the truth nobody says out loud:
The rest will follow.
If you’re a founder sitting on an idea, a pivot, a decision —
and you’re waiting for the full picture before you act…
This is your sign.
You don’t need the full path.
You just need the next step.
