Billy has been bobbing and pacing in his tiny yard at the Los Angeles Zoo for 33 years, ever since he was shipped to the zoo from Asia when he was 4 years old. This is his life, day end, day out. He has no grass, no trees, nowhere to go. It is time for Billy to go to sanctuary so that at long last he can start to heal from his profound stress behavior. And he can start to enjoy life as a real elephant, roaming on acres and acres of rolling hills with trees and ponds and the loving care of sanctuary caregivers. In Defense of Animals joins with celebrities Cher and Lily Tomlin, along with scores of passionate advocates to urge the LA City Council and the LA Zoo to send Billy to sanctuary now. He needs to be released soon before his body and mind deteriorate any further. All elephants deserve to live as free and wild as possible, not caged up in miniscule zoo exhibits. ➡️ Take action - click the link in our bio, and then click the button: Free Billy the Elephant! 32 Years of Misery is Enough! @mayorofla could have granted Billy and Tina peace! She CHOSE to send them to another zoo‼️ They will not be forgotten in Los Angeles. Repost @egla_freebilly 💔Billy at the Tulsa Zoo💔 Billy, along with Tina, was shipped from the Los Angeles Zoo to the Tulsa Zoo in May, 2025. Billy is exhibiting the same stereotypic behaviors in Tulsa that he displayed for years in Los Angeles. In this video, he is standing at a closed barn door. The incessant head bobbing and swaying demonstrated by Billy is an attempt to cope with the intolerable stress and physical restrictions of the captive environment. The repetitive movements are symptoms of stress, trauma and brain damage. Often observed in captive held elephants, these behaviors are not seen in free-living herds. Elephants in captivity are telling us loud and clear, with every bob and sway, that they are not thriving in captivity. They are suffering physically, mentally and emotionally. Billy & Tina need to be released to an accredited sanctuary where they could heal in peace, privacy and wide-open space with the autonomy and dignity that is their birthright. #FreeBilly #FreeTina #endcaptivity

Posted @withrepost • @kriskellyfoundation Over 10 years ago we were trying to talk to the LA Zoo to help Billy. Explaining that he needed more room. Amazing that they didn’t listen and all this time has passed and he is still suffering. Los Angeles is such a scary place for animals. They just do not care! Please take action and be the voice for Billy. More voices are needed for this tortured soul. Billy is a male Asian elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo. He was born in Malaysia. At just four years of age, his mother was killed in front of him and he was FORCIBLY TAKEN FROM HIS HOME, and imprisoned in the L.A. Zoo. Like so many elephants before him who have died at the L.A. Zoo, Billy is exhibiting severe symptoms that show he doesn’t have long to live. PAWS has 15 acres of soft earth, hills and streams waiting for Billy! Please take action and help Billy be free. #freebilly #elephant @lazoo #voiceforthevoiceless
