My mom and I have wanted to do a š„post about using the R-word for a long time and have put it off. We want our feed to be positive-
But last week something happened where we knew we had to do this post and share our feelings together.
š While I was at work, my mom was in the library and overheard a very loud conversation going on between three people out in the open having a meeting. One was a parent, one was a 23 year old and the other person was an employee of the state that provides services to people with disabilities.
There was a question asked about taking medication- and the reply came back āNo, I donāt take medication-
what do I look like a retard?ā
The case worker or parent said nothing after the remark.
⨠My mom packed up her things and calmly walked over to the table and introduced herself and said :
ā Hi, my name is Linda Strobel and I have a child with a disability.
I overheard your conversation about being a retard and I wanted to let you know how offensive that was and that Iām asking you to stop using it -itās hurtful and degrading.ā
The young lady apologized for saying it but the case worker and the mother just stared at my mom.
šWe understand that āretardedā was once a medical term, but thatās no longer the case. Itās a term used to degrade and dehumanize a very vulnerable population.
Many times these individuals cannot speak or stand up for themselves.
We see it still in TV shows and movies and people think itās a funny word to use.
š¼When you think about it we would never call someone the R-word who has had
š¹a stroke
š¹ suffering from PTSD
š¹challenged with mental illness
š¹challenged with Parkinsonās
Or any other kind of condition that might have a person take longer to do things, process information differently, move slower or have other difficulties.
Why is it still okay to use this word and hurt people with disabilities?
š¼It can be uncomfortable to confront family or friends when the word is out there -but If we donāt say something ā¦..who will?
š¼ Please stand up and say something if you hear this word, because It Truly Matters.

ā¢// HEREš
losing larry obliterated my life, and stripped it bare.
people stopped calling. my world got smaller.
the life we built together was no longer sustainable on my own, but i had no idea how to build something else.
at first, that reality felt like failure, and isolation. i felt like both of us were being forgotten.
but as the years went on, i realized something different:
šno one calls because i stopped keeping up relationships that werenāt reciprocal.
šmy world got smaller because my energy could no longer tolerate stress and chaos.
šmy life changed because i changed. because my grief body couldnāt keep pushing like before.
and i had a choice in this; i could see this as being left behind,
or i could see this as freedomā¦
š„freedom from jobs that drained me.
š„freedom from friendships that didnāt hold space for me.
š„freedom from obligations i never even enjoyed when larry WAS here.
i had to redefine what normal was NOW. what success looked like NOW. what a good life actually meant for me, as i am NOW.
š¬ tell meāwhere have you created freedom in your life since widowhood?
ā”ļø this is why you need a village that doesnāt forget you; that sees the shifts happening before you do and holds space for the isolation, fear, and rebuilding. a village that walks with you as you learn to carry all of this.
drop SAFESPEAK in the comments, and iāll send you the details on my membership village that was created for this.

Help me celebrate an incredible milestone: my client has hit ONE YEAR of sobriety! š
This past year has been a journey of strength, resilience, and profound transformation for her.
A whole year of...
š¤ Embracing new beginnings
š¤ Moving through old pains
š¤ Creating a life that makes her feel happy
š¤ Rediscovering who she truly is, moving away from who she once was
š¤ Strengthening her romantic partnership
This journey is a testament to the power of commitment and self-love. Over and over and over again.
It wasnāt a walk in the park, but every single day she chose herself. She remembered why she made this decision in the first place. And then she did the damn thing.
Sheās a force and thereās no stopping her now.
To everyone on their own journey to sobriety, just keep moving towards something that inspires and excites you. Change is possible and worth every step.
YOU ARE WORTH IT!
Letās show her some love and cheer her on as she continues this amazing journey!
