Freedom Reads and Dwayne Betts went to the notorious San Quentin in California and found it to be a space of transformation. Rehabilitionand programming are the hallmark of the new administration and talking to the men let us know that the mission is being pursued vigorously from both prisoners and staff. Dwayne performed Felon: An American Washi Tale, his one man show, and it was an amazing experience for all who were present that night. #freedomreads #books#followus✨ #juvenilejustice
Freedom Reads libraries are a curated collection of 500 books only found in prisons. Centered around the belief that freedom begins with a book, the library is a collaboration between @massdesigngroup and @freedombeginswithabook. The books are selected by poet @DwayneBetts, founder of Freedom Reads and 2021 MacArthur (Genius) Fellow who has a goal of placing them in 1,000 prisons across the US. “I survived solitary, and rediscovered a sense of freedom the system had tried to beat out of me, because of a book.” says Dwayne to @WashingtonPost @MassDesignGroup designed the shelves to be thoughtful and intentional with the idea that good design can also change lives. They are meant to encourage community and are adaptable to whatever space they are placed in. See the library in our “Justice is Beauty” exhibition at the Museum. #Architecture #Design #FreedomReads #RestorativeJustice #FreedomBeginsWithABook #WashingtonDC #DCMuseums #MASSDesignGroup

Tracie shares her awe and admiration for Dwayne Betts, who, as a result of being incarcerated as a teenager, discovered the power of reading in prison. He came out to become a lawyer and a published poet, founding Freedom Reads (@freedombeginswithabook) in 2020. The nonprofit has put custom made wooden libraries into over 560 prisons nationwide, transforming the lives of many prisoners. His pandemic puppy Taylor, a little Jack Russell Terrier, became Dwayne’s bridge to connect with people in his community with dogs being their common ground. 🎧 Link in bio > Dog Talk
