Children need books to build strong literacy skills and to learn how to think critically. āŒ But extremist politicians are banning books on history, culture, and democracy. We know better. NEA’s Read Across America is about protecting access to diverse books, not censorship. Sign the pledge to stop book bans at the link in bio.

šŸ“šāœŠšŸ½ Back in HD-147, doing what I love — supporting local Black-owned businesses and giving a legislative update on SB 13, the unconstitutional book ban. Grateful to share space with Teresa Brewer, Jeffrey Peck (great-grandson of W.E.B. Du Bois), and Dr. Harris — all champions for education and access to books. The work continues. The fight for truth and freedom to read is far from over. #HD147 #SB13 #FreedomToRead #SupportBlackBookstores #UnapologeticallyJo #PublicEducationMatters #TruthToPower #WEDuBoisLegacy #Democrat#StateRepJolandaJones #3rdWard #TexasSouthernUniversity #TSU #Sampson

Last week, the House joined the Senate in passing the Freedom to Read Act. This bill, filed by my colleagues Rep @johnmoranfor9 and @adamscanlonstaterep with a similar bill filed by Western Mass' own State Representative @saunders4rep, protects access to books and other library materials in school and public libraries across the Commonwealth and guards against politically motivated censorship. The bill requires school districts and public libraries to adopt written policies based on nationally recognized library standards, establishes transparent processes for challenging materials, and ensures that books remain available while reviews are underway. It also protects librarians and school library professionals from retaliation for decisions made in the course of their professional duties. In short, it affirms that decisions about library collections should be guided by educational value and professional expertise, not by political or ideological pressures, and reinforces Massachusetts' longstanding commitment to free expression, intellectual freedom, and the freedom to read. I was especially delighted that my amendment to require any challenged book to be considered in its totality, not simply based on a single scene or page, was accepted. This amendment brings fairness to the process. Tremendous thanks to the librarians, authors, parents, and educators who all spoke up in favor of this bill, pushing for the best possible bill. As you might guess, many of them hail from #1stHampshire (home to some of the best authors in the state if I do say so myself). Additional thanks to Chair @garballeysean for moving this bill forward and prioritizing it this session. A few differences have to be worked out between the Houes and Senate version but then this bill heads to the Governor's desk. #mapoli #FreedomtoRead #ReadLocal #ReadBooks #LibrariesRock
