🔊🎶 (sound on) With the press trip over, I was released to spend a few extra days in Japan—and it would be remiss to be a snowboarder 🏂 and not head back to Hokkaido for some world-renowned “#Japow.” 🗾❄️ While Rusutsu Ski Resort is on my Epic Pass, accommodations are limited and high-end. (Newsflash: there’s no real money in travel writing.) So eight years after my first time, I headed back to @NisekoUnited, the merging of four interconnected ski resorts, that’s fortunately on my @MountainCollectivePass. Niseko is massive and caters to all budgets, and I based myself in the Japanese room of the quaint, budget-conscious @NisekoSkiLodge Higashiyama, in the village of pensions, hostels, and villas about a 10-min walk to the closest ski lift. Instagram’s algorithm had been feeding me grim memes and Reels about the snow drought in Hokkaido over the past few weeks—“I traveled 6,000 miles to have the same conditions as the ice/east coast”—but by some miracle, I woke up, like a Dickensian character on Christmas morning, to a surprise snowstorm that hadn’t been predicted. And it dumped for maybe 24 hrs—the 12” refresh that was very much needed, with more Japow on the way. 🌨️😆 With a rental Ride War Pig, I head for the gondola, where on my first ride up, I lucked out, like in my solo backpacker days, by making friends with a trio from San Diego, who integrated me into their squad for the day. Larry, @Ian_Seq, and @LWood2 were like-minded and like-skilled, enjoying the trees 🪾🏂🪾, the boardercross pump track, and the gates into off-piste terrain. Full itinerary below 👇🗻🇯🇵 . 📍Niseko - The mother of all ski areas in northern Japan. The valley boasts 4 different “resorts” each with their own vibe. If you get the full pass you can easily explore all 4 without even taking off your gear, they’re all connected. Best part is it overlooks the legendary volcano Yotai, making the most insane backdrop. . 📍Grand HIRAFU - main village of the area. Has great nightlife, food, locals and tourists alike. The food truck areas are the main vibe for apres but close around 8 or 9. The main 7-11 is where most people get their food so go EARLY - late at night it becomes unbearably hectic. . 📍Rhythm HIRAFU - Gear rentals for ANYTHING you need. Honestly didn’t know what to expect as I always have my own gear but these guys hooked me up and the process is SO EASY. Plus they have a cafe/bar serving happy hour if your friends need to wait. . 📍Bar Gyu - The fridge door speakeasy! the most famous bar maybe in all Hokkaido, this is a great place to get a couple cocktails. Lineups are crazy and no reservations so get there either early or late to avoid the 6-9PM crowd. . 📍Otsukisama - Best ramen in Niseko. Amazing food and cheap beer. But they only take a certain number of guests per night so show up early and make sure you’re one of the first 25 or so people in line - after that they cut it off. . 📍Pizza: R Niseko - Decent pizza good portions and GIANT beers. It was insanely hot in the restaurant so be ready to sweat. . 📍Blo Blo Bar - (as seen in video) Another hidden gem just off the mountain. Get there before last run to get a spot as it’s PACKED. . 📍Nest 813 - Brand new massive solarium style lounge on top of the mountain with great amenities, food, beer, and coffee. Workers at a Ski Station were sweeping off snow from the lifts so that passengers won't get wet seated.
