🐾 This morning I watched her teach him how to be still. And I understood that she had learned it from him. Eight weeks ago Daisy wouldn't wag her tail. This morning she is lying in the spring sun with a ten month old golden chaos machine pressed against her side, teaching him — with nothing but a look — that sometimes you stay. Sometimes you don't chase the bird. Sometimes you just… lie in the warmth and let the morning be enough. Cooper taught her that. He was the still one. The patient one. The one who could lie in the backyard for an entire afternoon and find it completely sufficient. Daisy was always the energy — the bounce, the enthusiasm, the let's-go-let's-go-let's-go. But somewhere in thirteen years of lying beside him, some of his stillness got into her. And now she is passing it on. I watched Sunny start to bolt after a robin this morning and I watched Daisy look at him — just look at him — and I watched that puppy lower himself back down to the deck like he'd been doing it his whole life. Cooper's tennis ball was sitting between them the whole time. I put it there this morning. I don't know why. It felt right. I think he would have liked Sunny. I think he would have been patient with him in the way only old dogs can be patient with young ones. I think he would have lain in the spring sun exactly like this and let the puppy press against his side and found it completely sufficient. The yard is starting to go green again. Daisy noticed. I could tell. We are going to be okay. All three of us.
