since fushimi inari is open 24 hours, visiting after sunset is one of the best ways to avoid the crowds ♡
it took us about 30 minutes to reach the top, and we only passed a few other people along the way
don’t forget to bring water ▸ there are vending machines along the trail, but the higher you climb, the more expensive the drinks get 💀

Don't spend your dream trip fighting through tour groups. Set your alarm, hit Fushimi Inari at dawn, wander through Gion, and enjoy a quiet matcha before the crowds even wake up. The early wake-up call is 100% worth it.

10 days in Japan — and somehow, we managed to see SO much!
Japan was everything I imagined and so much more. From the peaceful temples and traditional streets of Kyoto to the bright lights and crazy energy of Tokyo — every day felt like a completely different experience.
We came during cherry blossom season, when Japan is at its most magical. Yes, there were crowds. Yes, we walked A LOT. 😅 But honestly? Every step was worth it.
In just 10 days, we managed to see:
📍 Tokyo — Senso-ji, Asakusa, Ueno Park, Sumida Park, Tokyo Skytree, Shibuya Crossing, Shibuya Sky, Hachiko, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Shinjuku, Kabukicho, Omoide Yokocho, Ginza, Roppongi Hills, Tsukiji Market, TeamLab Planets and so much more.
⛩️ Kyoto — Gion, Yasaka Shrine, Fushimi Inari, Bamboo Grove and the beautiful traditional streets of the city.
🦌 Nara — Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha… plus plenty of deer encounters!
10 days. 3 cities. Thousands of steps. Countless memories.
And somehow, I already want to go back. 🇯🇵✨
Don’t oversleep in Japan 🇯🇵
Arriving early means fewer crowds, quieter paths, and a much better experience. Getting to these spots before 9am puts you ahead of the tour buses and large groups.

👀 Check out the rest of the caption for more details about Fushimi Inari, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and our experience. 👇
We got to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest around 8:30am and Fushimi Inari around 8:15am on separate mornings, and both felt like completely different places compared to what you see later in the day.
🎋 At Arashiyama, there were fewer than 50 people and everyone had room to spread out and take photos without rushing.
⛩️ At Fushimi Inari, the lower torii gates were calm, and the crowds thinned even more as we hiked up Mount Inari, giving us long stretches of gates almost entirely to ourselves.
Another big advantage of arriving early is how much cooler and quieter everything feels. You can move at your own pace, stop at viewpoints, take the photos you actually want, and enjoy the experience instead of navigating foot traffic the whole time.
Both spots are free and open early, which makes morning (or late-evening) visits one of the best ways to experience them.
🇯🇵 Hope this helps you plan your time in Japan! If you have questions about timing, crowds, or either location, ask away!

KYOTO “the ultimate little guide” 🇯🇵
⛩️ Fushimi Inari at sunrise — beat the crowds and walk beyond the first few gates.
🎋 Arashiyama — bamboo grove first, then ditch the crowds and wander the quieter streets and riverside.
🍵 Matcha stop — Kyoto does matcha like nowhere else. I’m talking matcha lattes, soft serve, parfaits… the works.
🍡 Mochi mochi mochi — eat it fresh, eat it filled, eat it every time you see it. No regrets.
🏮 Gion + Higashiyama — get lost around the traditional wooden streets, little shops and lantern-lit corners.
🌸 Kiyomizu-dera at golden hour — one of those views that actually lives up to the hype.
🥢 Nishiki Market — go hungry. Pick up little bites as you wander and try anything that looks too good to walk past.
🦌 Nara day trip — meet the deer, feed the deer, attempt to maintain dignity when the deer start chasing you for more crackers.
🍶 Izakaya night — find a tiny neighbourhood spot, order whatever looks good and stay for “just one more.”
🌿 Philosopher’s Path — slow morning, beautiful scenery, zero itinerary pressure.
🌙 Kyoto after dark — wander the quieter streets once the day-trippers disappear. This is when Kyoto really gets magical.
And the golden rule: leave room in your itinerary to get completely lost. Some of the best bits of Kyoto are the ones you stumble upon. ✨
Save this for your Kyoto era 📌🇯🇵
IN SEARCH OF PEACE - ALWAYS.
Another beautiful day in Japan🇯🇵 … We hiked up through the bamboo forest trail at Fushimi Inari and made our way back down through the Tori Gates. Soooo pretty.
Twas packed at the bottom, but virtually empty at the top 🤷🏿♂️
#fushimiinari #fushimiinaritaisha #kyoto⛩ #japan🇯🇵
People always complain that the Fushimi Inari is packed. Which is true. But apparently almost nobody wants to wake up at 4:30 in the morning to see it like this. Worth the alarm?

Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari shrine is one of the most popular places to visit in all of Japan.
It’s free, it’s open 24/7, it’s historic. So that’s why it attracts roughly 10 million tourists a year.
That’s just an absurd numbers of tourists. So I’ll admit I was torn on whether or not to go while in Kyoto. I know Kyoto suffers from overtourism. The last thing I wanted to do was contribute to the problem.
But then I read that you can avoid the crowds by going early or late. I opted to go early, leaving my hotel around dawn for the short train ride to the Fushimi Inari station.
At the entrance, I was already pleasantly surprised by the manageable crowds. Because once you start shuffling underneath the 5,000 tori gates, it creates a tunnel and makes it feel like there are more tourists.
But early on in my walk I found a dirt trail that wrapped around one of the tori gates and led to the serene scenes you see in the video. For most of my walk, I was the only tourist around.
If you want to try and find this offshoot trail, comment “FUSHIMI!” and I’ll DM you a link to my Strava recording.
