Gourock I went to Gourock and the outdoor pool. I illustrated it a few weeks ago and it's been selling well at @thepirateandbluebellegallery since, so it was time for a top up. Greenock is a town in Scotland lying on the mouth of the River Clyde at the point where it becomes the firth of Clyde. Place-name scholar William J. Watson wrote that "Greenock is well known in Gaelic as Grianáig, dative of grianág, a sunny knoll". In 1296, Hugh de Grenock became a Scottish Baron, with Easter Greenock Castle as his seat. By 1400, his successor's estate divided into Easter and Wester Greenock baronies. In 1542, Wester Greenock Castle was founded by Sir John Schaw. The Scottish Reformation led to the construction of the Old Kirk in 1589. The Schaw family played a prominent role, obtaining a charter in 1670 to create the barony of Greenock. Greenock's fishing industry thrived, leading to the establishment of a burgh in 1635. Shipbuilding flourished, and by 1710, Greenock became a major port. The Custom House was established in 1714, facilitating colonial trade. The introduction of steamboat services in 1812 further boosted trade, with the Custom House undergoing expansion. Industry grew with the construction of Loch Thom in 1827, powering mills and shipbuilding. The railway network expanded in 1841, providing faster access to Glasgow and linking with Clyde steamer services. In 1869, the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway opened, followed by the extension of the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway to Gourock. Notable residents include engineer James Watt and guitarist John McGeough. Rhys made an immediate impact, slotting into the side having signed from the University of Washington Huskies in July.
