The 2016 Berlin Marathon was an epic race that Wilson Kipsang thought he had won twice! At 30k then again at 35 he surged away from Kenenisa Bekele with low arms and a shuffling gait only to have the gaps he created be closed within minutes.
Bekele clipped along - popping off the ground with his trademark powerful style seemingly struggling at times but ultimately prevailing in the end to take the race in 2:03.03 - 10 seconds ahead of Kipsang.
That huge heel recovery Bekele’s always had is a reflection of how much elastic force he generates off the ground with each step. He has more movement in general - shoulders dipping, knees driving forward and a more energetic arm swing. All features of a balanced system that are right for him. It takes more energy to propel himself forward in that way but he gets much more out of it too.
Kipsang on the other hand self-optimized in a different way - eliminating all unnecessary movement from his stride to create that calm smooth machine like action that we see and that ultimately led to some of the fastest marathon times ever run.
It just goes to show that everyone finds their own way to optimize their mechanics and once they do, the most efficient runners don’t always end up looking the same.

A crossover gait happens when your feet land at or across the midline of your body with each stride.
Instead of running on two separate tracks, you’re essentially running on a tightrope.
This can contribute to recurring overuse running injuries like:
— IT band pain and tightness
— plantar fascia pain
— posterior tibialis tendinopathy (pain along inside of lower shin and into inside of foot and ankle)
— lateral hip pain (or what you may think is hip bursitis)
I often find that common contributors are:
— glute weakness
— decreased single leg control
— fatigue-related compensations
Here are 3 ways you can start to address it:
1️⃣Try to think of “railroad tracks,” not “tightrope.”
Your feet should land slightly wider than you think.
2️⃣ Increase your cadence.
A slightly quicker turnover often reduces the tendency to cross over.
3️⃣ Strength train.
Focus on glute med strength, single-leg stability, and core control to create a more efficient running stride.
Pro tip: Record yourself running from behind. Many runners are surprised to see how much crossover is happening without realizing it.
Small changes in mechanics can make a huge difference in efficiency, performance, and injury prevention.

The hip joint is the center of your body’s movement. When it’s restricted, everything is affected: your back, your gait, and even your posture.
This exercise helps activate your stabilizing muscles, restore mobility, and make movement feel easier.
Start small, and your body will gradually return to its “factory settings.”

Weak Foot? Tight Hips? Walking Wrong?
If your hips are tight—especially your hip flexors—you may be lacking hip extension, which can cause your heel to lift early. This prevents you from properly using your glutes and limits your ability to push off through your big toe when you walk leading to a weak foot and tight hip flexors.
Do the first exercise for 3x30 second hold and perform the second one for 3x20 reps 3-4 times a week.

Single-limb stance is a critical component of gait and functional mobility!
During walking, the body spends approximately 40% of the gait cycle in single-limb support, requiring adequate strength, postural control, proprioception, and dynamic stability to safely advance the opposite limb.
Deficits in single-limb stability can contribute to gait deviations, impaired weight acceptance, reduced walking efficiency, and an increased risk of falls.
So, we must practice it!!! ⚖️
