The scene exemplifies adverse selection, a classic outcome of asymmetric information in finance.
The professor knows the action is a test, while the students do not—creating an information gap. Faced with uncertainty, students act to protect themselves individually by remaining silent, avoiding personal risk rather than pursuing collective action for fairness. This self-protective behavior leads to adverse selection: those willing to challenge the decision withdraw, while compliance becomes the dominant response.
As a result, the arbitrary action goes unchallenged, producing an inefficiency in the classroom’s “justice system.” Fairness is effectively devalued, and everyone becomes more exposed to future arbitrary treatment—mirroring how asymmetric information can generate systemic risk in financial markets.

Game Theory can take many forms.
In poker, it applies strictly to the quantitative aspects.
Every situation will have a mathematically optimal solution based on previous information and scenarios. So there will be certain strategies that you can employ in specific situations.
However, you also need to consider the factors that aren’t necessarily quantifiable, such as someone’s body language. This is where your intuition also comes into play.

This Isn’t Just an Oil Crisis… 🌍📉
Everyone’s focused on oil.
But that’s just the surface 👇
🛢️ Energy gets hit first
🌾 Then food
💻 Then technology
Why?
Because one chokepoint controls everything:
➡️ The Strait of Hormuz
~20% of global oil flows through it
Huge share of fertilizer exports depend on it
Key materials for semiconductors are tied to the region
So when it gets disrupted…
It’s not just gas prices ⛽
It’s:
➡️ Food production 🌾
➡️ Supply chains 📦
➡️ Tech + AI 💻
We’re already seeing:
• Fertilizer exports dropping sharply
• Helium shortages hitting chip production
• Rising energy + manufacturing costs globally
🧠 This is how systems break:
Not all at once…
But layer by layer
Energy → Food → Tech → Economy
Nothing is isolated.
Everything is connected.

In 1980, Robert Axelrod tested 62 strategies on cooperation.
Always nice? Exploited.Always ruthless? Isolated.
The winner: Tit for Tat.
Start with trust.
Respond immediately to betrayal.
Not naive.Not cold.
Strategically responsive.

One well. Sixteen villagers. A timeless tragedy.
The Tragedy of the Commons is the reason fisheries collapse, aquifers run dry, and climate agreements keep failing. When a resource is shared but consumption is private, every individual has a reason to take a little more — and the commons dies from the ordinary logic of self-interest.
In this simulation, a village well is drawn from by five personality types: pure Cooperators who take only 25 units, Responsible villagers who take their fair share, Opportunists who rush the well when it's full, Hoarders who stash massive private reserves, and the Greedy who always draw maximum. The well refills at a fixed rate. If the aggregate demand ever exceeds refill, the commons collapses — no matter how fast water trickles back in.
Watch what happens when you replace cooperators with greedy villagers, then mix them together, then slide the greed ratio from 20% to 95%. Even doubling the natural refill rate can't save a selfish village. Garrett Hardin described this in 1968; Elinor Ostrom won a Nobel Prize for showing how rules and governance can avert it. Forests, fisheries, groundwater, antibiotics, bandwidth, and the atmosphere itself all live under this same mathematics.

Moloch, also known as the ‘Multipolar Trap’, is a force of Game Theory.
It is the god of war and competition-gone-wrong. The bad guy of humanity’s evolutionary story that we have to figure out how to defeat.
In my chat with @lexfridman, we spoke about how people will still be incentivised to use a certain strategy in order to compete for the same prize, regardless of how bad that strategy may be if it offers a short-term advantage.
