Lagos Hosts Record-Breaking Esports Tournament As Gamers From Over 13 Countries Compete for Multimillion-Naira Prizes
Lagos has reinforced its status as Africa’s esports powerhouse with the successful hosting of GamrX 2025, the continent’s biggest competitive gaming tournament.
The event, held at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, brought together over 1,000 gamers from over 13 African countries, competing across titles such as Street Fighter, Red Bull Kumite, EA FC, Mortal Kombat, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty Mobile for a multimillion-naira prize pool.
Thousands of spectators attended in person, while countless esports enthusiasts followed online, reflecting the surging popularity of competitive gaming across the continent.
Organised by Gamr Africa in collaboration with the Lagos State Sports Commission, the tournament underscored the city’s strategic ambitions in the fast-growing digital sports economy, with projections showing Lagos could generate up to $7.9 million in esports revenue by 2029 and attract more than $30 million in investments over the next five years.
Speaking at the event, Mr Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, described Lagos as “a global reference point in the promotion of diverse sports” and applauded Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his foresight and commitment in driving sports as a tool for economic growth and youth engagement.
GamrX 2025 also showcased Lagos’s dedication to inclusivity, encouraging female participation and spotlighting African game developers whose work blends local storytelling with global appeal.
With Africa’s gaming market forecast to surpass $10 billion by 2033, Lagos is not merely preparing to ride the wave, it is staking its claim as a continental leader through bold infrastructure investments, talent development and strategic global partnerships. @lf_champ

@brunosmoky
First of all thank you everyone
And congratulations to all the winners and the participants of yesterday’s awards 🙏🏽
.
There’s a lot to say and I wish I had more time and was prepared a bit more for this, but I wanted to thank everyone for this incredible opportunity and recognition yesterday at the “Barrie arts awards “ I was nominated for the excellence arts award of the year and “we” won 🙏🏽
It certainly doesn’t come with an individual effort but with a collective and a lots of work and dedication to what I do and my collective and crews work together with my best friend @shalakattack we were able to make the citys walls look a lot more intreating and adding a lot more character and through every single wall we paint we try to tell a story and put in perspective thoughts that we believe that is important and relevant to be shown in this amazing public place that is the downtown Barrie !
Once again, although the work and all the hustle have to happen at some point in order to make things happen, in most cases individually, this is a team effort and I Bruno nor Shalak. Didn’t win this alone. And most importantly thank you Violeta meu anjo for being there and giving me the strength💜
This is an incredible opportunity and recognition from the city of @creativebarrie and the @maclarenart for letting the street art / Graffiti make it to the category! Hopefully this would show and inspire more Artists to get out and show case their work around this incredible town we are so proud to call it home !
