Happy Fathers Day!! What a gift it is to be your dad Rio, and how lucky are we to be celebrating Pride at the same time. Father’s Day can bring a mix of emotions for so many people. For me being able to say I am a Dad makes me so proud . But being here in Disneyland reminds me of my Dad (we took a coach together from London to Disneyland the first year the park opened, 30 years ago!) so many happy memories, yet it’s so sad that he never got to meet Rio. My dad would have loved to be part of his life. Managed to film this entire bloody thing without mentioning why I’m doing it. Whoops. So: Having spent a large part of my adult life inventing cakes, I have consistently failed to do anything with the recipes. Thought I’d start publishing them. Here’s the first. Yogurt Olive Oil Cake: The perfect cake to take to an afternoon tea. Easy AF - can get it in the oven in under 20 mins. Low-ish fat and sugar. Can be made the day before. It’s also a subtle flavour - just different enough for people to ask what’s in it, and be impressed when you tell them, without being so unusual they think “um weird” and start making their polite face at you. RECIPE:

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup Greek yogurt
3/4 cup granulated sugar 3 eggs 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup date syrup 1 lemon (rind and juice)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract Whisk the first four ingredients in a bowl. Whisk the rest of the ingredients in another bowl. Combine the bowls, and stir with a spatula until the lumps are gone. Pour into a lined loaf tin. Bake at 170 degrees celsius for 45-50 mins or until a skewer comes out clean. You’re welcome. *If you can’t find date syrup, you can omit it and increase sugar to 1C; you will lose a bit of richness. **If you want to make it a celebration cake, boil 1C dates with a teabag for 10 mins, drain and cool, then add to cake batter. Then, while it’s cooking, make a lemon glaze by boiling juice from 2 lemons and 1/2 cup sugar and drizzle on the cake as soon as you take it out. Then, once it’s cool, if you can be bothered, decorate with flower petals and/or sugared/boiled lemon slices. #girldad #gaydaddy #healthybaking

The assumption that this young woman or my almost 10 year old daughter is missing out by having two dads is so incredibly harmful and the brazenness of people telling me so is disgusting. Having two loving parents is a gift to any child. And for the record, gay dads are especially awesome because we don’t take it for granted.
