This is a Gullah Geechie New Year’s tradition rooted in West African rice culture and carried through the Lowcountry. It’s rice, field peas, and smoked meat — made the way it has always been made.
And let me be clear:
Hoppin’ John is made with field peas.
Not a bowl of black-eyed peas.
It has to be field peas.
Field peas symbolize coins.
Rice represents wealth and abundance.
Collard greens are for money.
Cornbread is for good luck.
Smoked meat adds depth, nourishment, and flavor — because our food was always about survival and excellence.

It’s memory.
It’s culture on a plate.
