FSU Head Toby Young joined Nigel Farage on @gbnewsonline earlier this week to discuss the former UKIP leader's recent de-banking, as well as the wider problem of politically motivated financial #censorship in western liberal democracies. Mr Farage went public this week with news that he may be forced to leave Britain after his bank closed his personal and business accounts, and other high street firms have refused to allow him to transfer his funds to them. The decision comes after a number of other, high-profile cases of politically motivated financial #censorship of dissenting voices. In February 2022, Canada froze the bank accounts of anti-vaccine mandate protestors, with Deputy Canadian PM Chrystia Freeland making clear that banks would also be asked to freeze the personal accounts of anyone linked with the protests, with no due process, no appeals process and no court order necessary. Last summer, PayPal shut down the accounts of the FSU and @usforthemuk, a parents’ group that fought to keep schools open during the pandemic, due to “the nature of its activities”. More recently, Ko-Fi, an online platform that allows users to sell their work and raise donations, removed a number of accounts belonging to #feminists and #feminist organisations due to their #gendercritical views. During this clip of their chat, Toby mentions the chilling case of someone who contacted the FSU for advice this week, having been de-banked by Yorkshire Building Society. Although Toby doesn’t name names, the person in question turns out to have been Rev Richard Fothergill, who has now spoken to the @thetimes about his case (link in bio). When the Yorkshire Building Society asked their longstanding customer for feedback, he queried why his local branch was festooned with Pride flags and issued a polite rebuttal of transgender ideology. Four days later, he received a letter saying his internet savings account would be closed. It's a story that perfectly illustrates why the FSU is lobbying for a change to UK law so it becomes illegal for financial services providers to withhold or withdraw service from any customer in the UK for purely political reasons.
