This is “Gene Chaser” the 180-foot Damen support vessel that follows the 180-foot Amels “Gene Machine.” Both yachts used to belong to the American scientist Jonathan Rothberg. Rothberg is one smart cookie, with three degrees from Yale and over 100 patents to his name. He founded the human-genome mapping company CuraGen in 1991 while still a grad student. By 2000 the company had gone public and had a market cap of $5 billion, more than American Airlines. He resigned from CuraGen 5 years later and took on a number of other successful business pursuits focusing on the human genome and medical devices like a handheld ultrasound machine.
When Covid paralyzed the world in February 2020, Rothberg, like many ultra-wealthy humans, took to the safety of his yacht with his family, including a daughter who was in a high-risk category. By early March he was dumbfounded by the government’s inability to marshal its resources to give a competent medical response to the illness. He was in the Bahamas on March 7th when he tweeted from his onboard office “thinking about a low-cost, easy-to-manufacture, home test kit for corona virus.” He soon refitted “Gene Chaser” to help in bringing his tweet to fruition. He installed high-tech medical instruments onboard in a laboratory, as well as a shipping container with extra beds for scientists. The team—buoyed by an $8.1 million grant from the NIH—worked like mad to get the covid tests to a place where they felt they could present them to the world. When they did, the FDA fast-tracked approval, and long story short, that’s how you ended up swabbing your nose in your kitchen before inviting your mother over for dinner.
Before Covid struck, Rothberg was planning on spending his time on “Gene Chaser” and “Gene Machine” studying panspermia—the theory that all life on Earth derived from the arrival of ancient space dust. I assume by this time he has figured that one out too.
