Okay… maybe we’re a little biased. But here’s what we do know. At Eagle Hill Homes, our entire office team (besides @nick_riccio_ ) is made up of women. $Nobody sits down and shows you this math when you’re starting out in the trades. The developer who commissioned that building walked away with a return on investment that would make your head spin. The general contractor made his margin. The subcontractors made theirs. And the guy with the tools who made it all physically possible — who showed up every day and actually built the thing — got his hourly rate. Which, if you do the math against the total value of what was created, is a fraction of a fraction of a percent. This isn’t a complaint. This is just how value gets distributed in an industry where labor is a cost to be managed rather than a partner in the outcome. Understanding that structure is the first step to doing something about it. The men who figured this out — who stopped being the labor and started building something where they captured more of their own value — didn’t do it by getting a better rate per hour. They built income in a different industry entirely. One where their effort came back to them directly instead of being filtered through someone else’s margin.
