A massive bear displays the terrifying and erratic behavior associated with a late-stage rabies infection. The animal appears disoriented and aggressive, gnawing uncontrollably on the metal bars of its enclosure as the virus attacks its nervous system. This distressing footage captured by u/tareqttv (Reddit) serves as a stark reminder of how devastating this disease is for wildlife. Seeing a powerful predator lose all motor control and awareness like this is truly unsettling. #wildlife #rabies #nature #bear

Rats should always be given the possibility to gnaw on materials like for example branches and nuts in shells. After all they are rodents and gnawing is one of their natural behaviors. But I don’t like it when companies try to sell us stuff with the motivation that rats need to gnaw to wear their teeth down. Some rats won’t gnaw despite given all kinds of different things. That doesn’t mean their teeth will grow uncontrollably! Problems occur only if the teeth for some reason (like a tumor, abscess or injury) are not aligned correctly. Then the rats can’t wear them down by bruxing and this condition is called malocclusion. No chew toys in the world will fix this, only regular vet visits to trim their teeth manually. Rodents’ incisors grow throughout their lives. In rats, they grow up to 2–3 mm per week, and in guinea pigs and degus, even faster. If the teeth are not worn down, the bite changes, mucosal injuries and infections appear, and the animal refuses to eat. Gnawing is primarily a physiological regulation. But that’s not all there is to it. In nature, rodents spend hours processing material: bark, roots, seeds, dense fibres. This is part of their survival strategy — accessing food, building burrows, marking their territory. When gnawing, the orientational-exploratory system is activated: dopamine maintains interest, and repetitive movements stabilise arousal. The rhythmic work of the jaws reduces the level of background anxiety through parasympathetic activation. This is a physical way of processing tension. When a rodent is unable to gnaw, the energy of searching does not disappear. It shifts into stereotypical behaviour: endless running in circles, gnawing on cage bars, plucking fur. Behaviour becomes narrow and repetitive because the basic programme has no outlet. Gnawing is not a «bad habit.» It is a structuring activity through which the animal regulates its body and psyche.

What is a drainage behaviour? This is a concept described by Dr Sarah Heath, a leading specialist in veterinary behaviour. In brief, The concept is this - every dog has a different emotional capacity which is a ‘sink’. High emotional experiences fill up this sink and if the input is high or the output is low, the sink overflows. This overflow is ‘over threshold’ experiences commonly seen as fight, flight or freeze response. . One way we can avoid overflowing?
