NASA’s Artemis II mission lifted off successfully Wednesday, sending four astronauts on the first crewed journey around the Moon in more than 50 years. The Space Launch System rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft blasted off from Launch Complex 39B at 6:35 p.m. ET. Aboard were NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, commander; Victor Glover, pilot; and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The approximately 10-day mission will test deep-space systems ahead of future lunar landings. It builds on the uncrewed Artemis I flight in 2022 and advances NASA’s goal of sustained human presence on the Moon and eventual Mars exploration.

NASA’s Artemis II mission is now underway, sending four astronauts on a nine-and-a-half-day journey around the moon and back. If all goes according to plan, the crew — commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — will get an unprecedented view of the far side of the moon and set a record for the farthest distance ever traveled from Earth: 252,000 miles. Artemis II is intended as a test flight to check out systems and equipment, laying the groundwork for future missions to land astronauts on the moon in 2028. #NASA #moon #artemisii #artemis
