Behind the scenes at OMCA! Our team is putting the finishing touches on our newest exhibition, Good Fire: Tending Native Lands — opening this Friday! 🔥
Rooted in Indigenous knowledge, Good Fire invites you to reimagine California’s relationship with fire. Discover how Native communities in Northern California have used cultural burning for generations to care for the land, support ecosystems, and sustain traditions. 🌱
OMCA Members get exclusive early access! See the exhibition one day before the general public—starting TOMORROW, November 6, 2025.

Ever wanted to ride along on a prescribed burn operation? Or see what it looks like FROM ABOVE?! You're in luck! Tag along with our Southern Wisconsin Burn Crew and longtime TNC volunteers at a recent prescribed fire at the Pine Hollow preserve in the Baraboo Hills.
Photographer and licensed drone operator Kevin Sink was there to capture the action, including some very cool video from the air. A total of 57 acres were treated with fire, on a woodland area where oaks were planted 25 years ago to help restore the canopy in the area. The fire will help knock back thicker underbrush that can crowd out diverse native species that need more sunlight to thrive.
The use of prescribed fire dates back thousands of years and is one of the vital tools in the toolbox for keeping Wisconsin's ecosystems healthy.

🔥 Restoring Nature with Good Fire! 🌿
Prescribed burns are a vital tool for preventing wildfires, promoting healthy ecosystems, and reconnecting communities with traditional land management practices.
Meet Shay, an Environmental Scientist with California State Parks near her hometown of Paradise, California, helping to restore the land using Good Fire.
Join Shay as she shares her experience helping to implement a controlled burn and explore new ways to safely manage fire. 🌎🔥

On Thursday Jan. 8, Corkscrew’s Prescribed Fire Crew conducted a 25-acre prescribed fire north of the Blair Visitor Center and exit boardwalk. Fire days are long and don’t end after ignition is complete. The crew then transitions into mopup mode, followed by the burn boss monitoring overnight, and the crew is back at it on the second day with cold mopup operations. 📸: Audubon staff/Allyson Webb #corkscrewswampsanctuary #audubonsociety #audubonfl #goodfire
🔥 Prescribed Fire; Controlled Burn 🔥
It’s time to upgrade our collective relationship with Fire, along with our ecological management practices.
The concept of “Fighting Fire” is due for a reframe.
Fire is a tool to tend land. It is a cultural practice that deserves to be reintegrated into the mainstream. It is beautiful to see this conversation and practice expressing itself in California and around the world.
Thank you to Tim @firstrainfarm for the invite to this burn, and for the beautiful work he is organizing and providing to his community in Nevada County California
Thank you to Beasley @a.community.member for his succinct overview of some of the many stacked functions of good fire and for his dedication to ecological land management.
Please share your questions and insights in the comments, let’s fire up the conversation!

It’s been 21 days since the controlled burn at the farm at Sinking Creek—and the transformation is underway.
What was once blackened ground is now bursting with signs of renewal.
Prescribed fire is an ancient practice that gives back more than it takes.
Let’s continue to care for the land—intentionally and respectfully.

#Newstudy on bobwhites out of @talltimbersresearch focused on chick ecology. They tagged chicks ~12 days old and tracked them into the fall. This is a difficult life stage to study, especially in this species (the difficulties showed in this study as a large number of tagged birds had unknown fates). Thus not much has been published on bobwhite chick ecology. Only 22% made it 4 months. Of the known fates, predation was the most common loss. This population is in an intensively managed landscape with aggressive habitat management, predator control, and supplemental feeding so it is likely that chick survival is often low and other adaptations allow quail populations to overcome it (they have a tremendous quail population despite the low chick survival). I was really surprised to see that snake predation was just behind avian in leading cause of loss. Would you have thought corn snakes would be the primary snake culprit?!? The authors opined that this may be compensatory predation because of the mammal predator removal shifting the relative importance of predator guilds. In other words, remove one predator and chicks just get eaten by something else. As always, if you would like the link to the study, leave a comment for the link. #northernbobwhite #bobwhite #bobwhitequail #ufgamelab #quailmanagement #longleafpine #rxfire #goodfire #predatorcontrol #gamebirds #uplandgamebirds #longleafpineecosystem
When applied correctly, prescribed burning is one of the most cost-effective and efficient tools available for managing wildlife habitat. 🔥 #rxfire #biologistsatwork #georgiawildlife #prescribedfire #prescribedburn #goodfire
There is such a thing as #goodfire. Watts Bar manager, Rob Klippel, uses prescribed fire as a tool. Prescribed #fire has been utilized for centuries to manage lands. Our managers are certified and follow State Fire Council guidelines. Did you know you can learn about prescribed fire for your own property? Visit tn.gov and search for prescribed fire.
