I have gone down a rabbit hole of videos from struggling PhD students. If this is you - if you’re seeing this kind of content, just know, it doesn’t have to be like this and it can get better. In case you were never told - the feeling of growth and learning is frustration. If you aren’t feeling frustrated then you’re doing something wrong 😉 there are lots of different scenarios that might make a PhD student considering dropping out. BUT, if you made it into the program - you can complete it (if that’s what you want) A lot of the upfront PhD work is just figuring out how academia works, learning new skills, and failing a bunch of times 😅 it’s a very different degree, and if you’re feeling a little lost - just know you’re not alone, and you can get through the hardest parts. I would rank my first year as like a 4/10. I was just really confused and stressed for most of it… BUT, here I am now in my final year with two published papers 🤯 I just want there to be a little bit of hope on your Instagram, in case you stumbled down the rabbit hole like me and don’t have someone telling you how good it can be. I’m also slowly building out resources on my page (and eventually on YouTube!) to help with writing, understanding research terms as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis. Actually, it’s because I want to know where the arsenic goes 💁‍♀️ Grad school is crazy y’all. One day you’re normal and then you blink and you’re suddenly super invested in arsenic remobilization in contaminated landscapes! 🤪🤓 The tube I’m holding here is a Kemmerer tube. It’s used to collect water samples from different depths in the lake. You lower it down to the desired depth then send a messenger (a metal weight) down a rope connected to the tubes lid.
