🎶🔥 Edvard Grieg – In the Hall of the Mountain King (Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46) Nicolò Foron – conductor | London Symphony Orchestra 🎻 • Grieg hated every note he wrote for this scene. In a letter to a friend, he was specific: the piece "reeks of cow dung, Norwegian over-the-topness, and troll self-sufficiency, to the point that I cannot bear to listen to it". He had accepted the commission from playwright Henrik Ibsen against his own will. He considered the text of Peer Gynt "the most unmusical of all subjects". He composed for the money and delayed delivery several times. Thirteen years later he gave in again: he pulled the piece he despised from the original incidental score, arranged it into a concert suite and released it into the world. It became the most performed work of his career. • In 1931, Fritz Lang did something Grieg could never have predicted. In the film M, the killer played by Peter Lorre whistles this theme every time he feels the urge to murder a child. Lorre could not whistle. The man you actually hear in the film is Lang himself. It was one of the first times cinema used a musical motif to identify a character even when he was off-screen. From that moment on, this melody became universal shorthand for rising menace. When you hear it in another film, you will hear it differently: it is telling you that something terrible is about to happen. • The conductor you just watched is Nicolò Foron, Italian-German, 25 years old. This video is the final round of the 2023 Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, at LSO St Luke's. Eighty candidates applied. Three reached the podium in front of the London Symphony Orchestra. Each finalist conducted three pieces that night, this one among them. The jury chose him for his "combination of charisma, energy, technique and musicality". Foron left with the role of Assistant Conductor of the LSO. • 👉 Follow, the best of classical music, daily in your feed. • • • #orchestra #grieg #classicalmusic #peergynt
