On the shores of Haida Gwaii stood a cedar-longhouse where the Haida people gathered. With no nails, only massive cedar poles and joinery, these homes carried stories of family, forest, sea and spirit. The carved pole at the front marked identity. The fire in the heart of the house warmed more than bodies, it connected people with culture and place. A Haida Gwaii duo is promoting the beauty of an endangered Indigenous language through rap.⁠ ⁠ Jiixa (Gladys Vandal), an 84-year-old elder of the Haida Eagle clan, teamed up with Julia Weder, 25, last December to form the rap group Siijuu Jaadas, which means "cool ladies" in the Haida language.⁠ ⁠ Jiixa, a Haida language teacher in Skidegate, B.C., is one of nine core members of the Skidegate Haida Immersion Program, which is trying to revitalize the Haida language.⁠ ⁠ The language has only two dozen fluent speakers left, according to the Haida Nation council.⁠ ⁠ Weder says teaching and learning the Haida language is vital to healing the intergenerational trauma that First Nations have experienced under colonization.⁠ ⁠ "Language can unlock those connections to ancestors that people would have otherwise lost.”⁠ ⁠ Tap the link in our bio to read more.
