Quick Hack for Cool Handles Super fun beginner hack to creating cool mug handles, Here’s how! 🏺 1. Roll a slab and cut a thin strip. Keep it even — thickness matters here or it won’t attach cleanly. 2. Find a cookie cutter you love and use it as a shape guide. Trace or follow the outline to cut your handle into a fun shape before it sets. 3. Smooth with a damp sponge. Blend any rough edges. The wetter your sponge the smoother your finish. 4. Let it set until it’s no longer super pliable. Be patient. It needs to hold its shape before you attach it. 5. Slip and score, then attach to your mug. Don’t skip this step , it’s what keeps the handle from falling off after firing. 6. Let it dry very, very slowly. Cover loosely with plastic and dry it with the mug. Rushing this is the number one reason handles crack. I recently posted two videos showing a unique technique of making pot lids that I learned from the very talented @candice_methe . I enjoyed reading all your comments! Candice’s technique involves making the flange of the lid on the INSIDE of the pot first, and then connecting it to the lid — making for a perfect fit. This made me wonder what if I made the flange on the OUTSIDE of the pot instead? Well, I did have some challenges because the base has to be leather hard and the strip of clay for the flange has to be soft. With the difference in moisture, as the flange dried, the lid became a bit too tight and I had to spend quite a bit of time scraping the base to achieve a looser fit. In the end it worked out, but I’d probably choose a more simple approach next time: just making a separate slab with a short wall all around to make a lid — or in the case of this butter dish, a base for the butter to sit in. after attaching hundreds of handles and accepting that it will never be my favorite task, I’m grateful that I’ve found ways to make it as seamless as possible. part 2 is coming next week! I’ll show you exactly how i clean up the slip right after attaching. follow along so you don’t miss it 🥰 the reason this works so well is that the slip from the handle transfers onto the mug exactly where you need to score, so no overscoring and no excessive cleanup around the edges. bonus: i haven’t had a single handle crack since switching to this method, but that also comes with many other tips for attaching, which I’ll share in future episodes of #tiptuesdays so make sure you’re following along 🫶🏼 #beginnerpottery #attachinghandles # potterytips #handbuilding

Step-by-step: how to dry clay tiles and intricate wall pieces flat without cracks or warping. 1. Dry your piece on plaster so the bottom and underside can release moisture evenly. 2. Cover the top with a damp cloth so the top surface doesn’t dry too quickly. 3. Cover the whole piece with plastic for a few days, or up to a week for larger pieces. 4. Slowly open the plastic over time, then remove it completely once the piece is firm enough to finish drying. Slow drying = stronger, flatter, cleaner results.
