Coloratura madness 🎶✨ Deep in rehearsals for my solo recital with the incredible conductor @attilio.cremonesi as part of the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe. @staatstheaterka Performing for a sold out audience of over 1,000 people was an absolute joy and a huge success! So grateful for this unforgettable experience 💛 #opera #soprano
🎶 Lascia ch'io pianga (Rinaldo) — Cai Thomas 🎭 Handel wrote this aria when he was 25, fresh off the boat in London. He had two weeks to deliver an opera no English audience had ever seen before: the first Italian opera written for their stage. He reused a melody he had already used twice in earlier works. It became the most loved moment of the night. ✨ In the opera, Almirena is a prisoner. The evil king who captured her has just declared he loves her. She answers with this: let me weep. That is all she asks. The role was written for a soprano. Handel never imagined a boy of 12 would sing it three centuries later and make people forget the woman was supposed to. 🕊 Cai Thomas was a finalist at BBC Radio 2's Young Chorister of the Year. When a major label passed on his album, his family ran a Kickstarter. Hundreds of strangers funded it. The voice you are hearing lasted a few more months. Treble voices do not wait. Does it feel different knowing he could only sing this once in his life? 🎤 Cai Thomas 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Nationality: Welsh Voice type: Boy treble (at time of recording) Date of Birth: 2007 🎼 Lascia ch'io pianga From: Rinaldo, HWV 7 Composer: George Frideric Handel 🇩🇪🇬🇧 Composition date: 1711 Libretto: Giacomo Rossi (scenario by Aaron Hill) Original language: Italian #BestOfOpera #BoyTreble #Handel #BaroqueAria

🌳👑 Handel – Ombra mai fu (Serse, HWV 40) Andreas Scholl – countertenor 🎤 • In 1738, at the King's Theatre in London, the premiere was a disaster. The opera was pulled from the stage after five nights and disappeared from theaters for nearly two hundred years. But the opening aria didn't wait. It broke free, became known simply as 'Handel's Largo,' and made its way into church organs, weddings, and funerals. Caruso recorded it. John Philip Sousa arranged it for band in 1902. The opera slept while the aria crossed the centuries on its own. • The whole aria has only 52 measures. About a minute and a half of music, tucked in before the opera's drama really begins. The orchestra is stripped to the minimum: strings and basso continuo, no trumpets, no oboes, no timpani. Each instrument plays softly, leaving the voice almost alone. It's an opera scene, but it sounds as if Handel had forgotten the whole theater for a minute and a half. What you hear is the silence he drew around a single melody. • Andreas Scholl entered the boys' choir of the Kiedrich chapel in Germany at age seven. At thirteen, he was chosen from twenty thousand choristers to sing solo at a mass for Pope John Paul II in Rome. When his voice changed in adolescence, he refused to become a tenor or baritone. Today he sings the roles Handel wrote for Senesino, the composer's favorite singer. Here he appears in glasses, a dark suit, his eyes nearly closed, without a single theatrical gesture. When he sings this aria, he is singing exactly where Handel thought his music belonged. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • • • #opera #singer #classicalmusic #handel
🕊 Cai Thomas fue finalista del Young Chorister of the Year de BBC Radio 2.
