Why they rocked my world👇 ▪️Hans Hoffman edited by James Yohe In 2001, I went to an exhibit of Hoffman at UC Berkeley. It was mind boggling and my first intro live and up close of this kind of work. This book was a great introduction to abstract expressionism. ▪️Lee Krasner - A Catalogue Raisonné by Ellen G. Landau She was one of the first women abstract painters I studied closely as I was taken with the work, especially the scale of it.  I also felt I could relate to her. The book was so useful because it is contains every work she ever did. It is encyclopedic! ▪️Joan Mitchell by Klaus Kertess At the time I bought it, it was one of the most comprehensive books on her. I studied that book endlessly, looking at every stroke, color combination, etc. It was the best teacher I ever had. What where some of the most influential books you read or looked at when you first started painting? #abstractartists #artbooks #joanmitchell #leekrasner #trendingreel #hanshoffman #julieschumer #inspiration #books Abstract Artist • Expressionist • Art Books • Inspiration • Learn • Art Education • Contemporary
As Venice pulses to the rhythm of the Mostra, cinema also comes to the Fondazione Querini Stampalia to offer three perspectives on Hans Hartung. To mark the closing of the exhibition « The Invisible Chord. Hans Hartung and Music » at @fondazionequerinistampalia in collaboration with @perrotin , three documentaries will be screened throughout the day on Sunday 13 September 2026, the exhibition’s final day. Together, they offer three complementary perspectives on Hans Hartung’s world: his life and artistic journey, his dialogue with Mark Rothko, and the post-war cultural context that shaped his generation. Watch an excerpt from one of the documentaries screening this Sunday, « Hans Hartung, A Passion for Painting » directed by Romain Goupil. Last call: A Tribute to André Emmerich It’s the last weekend to visit “A Tribute to André Emmerich” at 542 West 24th Street. The exhibition brings together over 30 works by more than 20 artists from Emmerich’s gallery program, including Anne Truitt, Al Held, Alexander Liberman, Peter Bradley, Friedel Dzubas, Wolfgang Hollegha, Jack Tworkov, and Hans Hofmann. Installed in a dense, maximalist hang across paintings, sculpture, drawings, and watercolors, the presentation reflects the breadth of his vision. Visit the gallery before the exhibition closes on June 27, open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-6pm. #andreemmerich
Hans Hartung (1904–1989) became one of the defining figures associated with Tachisme, the European postwar movement named after the French tache, meaning “stain” or “mark.” His paintings turned gesture into language: scratches, rapid lines, sweeping strokes and bursts of pigment create a sense of instinctive movement and energy. After fleeing Nazi Germany, Hartung joined the French Foreign Legion, was wounded during World War II and lost a leg, later returning fully to painting. Throughout his life he experimented relentlessly, using brushes, rollers, spray guns, scrapers and even garden tools to create new forms of mark-making. His work helped shape a distinctly European form of gestural abstraction alongside the rise of Abstract Expressionism in America. Studio shot of Diana Kurz recalling a critique from Hans Hofmann and her time working with Motherwell, pictured here beside her painting OP no7 (1960–61). Born in Austria, Diana and her family fled in 1938, later settling in Brooklyn and Queens. She received her BFA from @brandeisuniversity (1957) and her MFA from @columbia (1960), where she studied with John Heliker. OP no7 exemplifies Diana’s early Abstract Expressionist period, marked by bold color and expressive gesture in dialogue with the New York School. Best tip for abstract painters by Hans Hofmann. “Never reveal your sources.” #whitecubeofficial #thebrooklynrail
Colour Theory and Depth. In this short Lori Ridgeway talks about how she uses push and pull with colour theory to create depth in her near landscapes where linear perspective is not an option. #art #artwork #artlife #artgallery #artcollector #artofinstagram #giftideas #giftguide #paintings #oilpainting #acrylicpainting #customframes #customframeshop

We caught up with the artist Diana Kurz in her studio where she discussed some of the influences on her work and getting a critique from Hans Hofmann. Pictured is OP #7, 1960-1961. She doesn’t mention De Kooning, but does anyone else see the De Kooning-esque woman in the orange areas? We will highlight Diana’s work at the upcoming Hamptons Fine Art Fair, July 13-16. We now have more than 52,000 hits on this post!! Thank you all for your support, comments and appreciation for this classy lady. @hamptonsfineartfair #thehamptons #hamptonsart #dianakurzartist #interiordesign #artadvisory #femaleartist #womenofabstractexpressionism #hanshoffman #robertmotherwell #abstractexpressionism #abstractart #paintingoftheday #dekooning @dedalusfoundation
🥵 100° this week in Missouri? Sounds like a good excuse to spend even more time in the studio. I'm beginning a new series on four 36" × 24" cradled wood panels, creating a large-scale piece that can be displayed in multiple ways. Hung together in a row, the work spans 12 feet, or it can be arranged as a 2 × 2 grid for a more architectural 6 × 4 foot composition. I'm looking forward to seeing where these paintings take me. The first layer is Phthalo Turquoise, followed by oil stick lines and marks to get the conversation started. Then came another layer of turquoise, magenta, and oil mixed with cold wax. There are PLENTY more layers ahead... At this stage, I'm working through ideas both in my head and directly on the panels. 💭 I'm thinking about the architectural geometry of Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park paintings, the bold color relationships of Hans Hofmann, and the expressive linework of Joan Mitchell. Add in the steady influence of the river flowing outside my studio, and we'll see which voice becomes the strongest. This is the kind of piece I love imagining in a spacious, light-filled home, where a collector wants artwork that becomes a focal point and invites you to spend time with it. Whether installed above a long dining table, across a large wall, or in a contemporary living space, the flexibility of the four-panel format allows the work to become part of the architecture of the room. One thing I've learned over the years is to never force a painting. I like giving myself the freedom to change direction whenever the work asks for it. For now, my palette is Phthalo Turquoise, Magenta, Hansa Yellow Light, Ultramarine Blue, and Yellow Ochre... unless I change my mind tomorrow.
