One of the biggest mistakes people make when planning a garden is starting with what to grow instead of what they actually love to eat.
In our house, we work backwards.
First we decide what meals we truly enjoy eating throughout the year. Then we look at the ingredients those meals require. From there, we decide what makes sense to grow.
This simple shift changes everything.
Instead of ending up with a garden full of vegetables that feel like a chore to use, you end up with ingredients that naturally make their way onto your table again and again.
A garden should support the life happening in your kitchen, not the other way around.
Plan your garden around the meals you love, and suddenly the harvest becomes something you’re excited to cook with.
And that’s where the real magic happens. 🌱

Here’s a polished caption that keeps your voice, warmth, and teaching style while tightening the message for Instagram:
When planning your garden, start by working backwards.
Ask yourself:
What does your family actually love to eat?
What dishes do you wait all season for?
Make that list before buying seeds or walking into the plant nursery.
It’s easy to get excited and grow things that look beautiful… but if no one eats them, they end up wasted.
A garden planned around your table will always be more successful than a garden planned around a catalog.
Start with the meals you love.
Then grow the ingredients that make them possible.
🌱 Practical gardening.
🍅 Delicious results.

When people comment and say “must be nice to do your little hobby”!
Hobby? This is my life. Most of my day, every day, is cultivating, baking/cooking and preserving food for my family. You know, one of the three necessary things to sustain humans 😁. We eat very well, and I grow thousands of dollars worth of food for my family for the year, which equals big savings while providing the highest quality, nutrient dense foods because they are as fresh as you can get and zero sprays or preservatives.
It can feel a little insulting to tell farmers and gardeners most of their livelihood is a “little hobby”.

🍂✨ My garden may be completely overgrown right now, but it’s giving us the BIGGEST harvest of the year — right here in the middle of fall! 🌿🥕🍅 It still blows my mind how much food is producing this late in the season. From summer veggies hanging on to fresh fall crops coming in, the garden is overflowing.
Fall gardening has quickly become my favorite… there’s something so magical about gathering armfuls of food when the air is crisp and the leaves are turning. 🧡

Every year the garden reinvents itself. ✨🌱
Spring rarely begins with beauty. It starts with dirt, rebuilding, and realizing what didn’t quite work the year before.
After a few seasons I finally admitted the beds were too close together, the fence posts had rotted out, and the whole space needed to be reshaped. So this year we’re widening the paths, replacing the posts, and slowly redesigning the garden so it’s easier to work in and more beautiful to spend time in.
Right now it may look like a construction zone, but this is how every growing season begins.
In a few months this space will be full again: tomatoes for canning, herbs for the kitchen, flowers for the house, and the beginnings of many summer recipes.

Have you seen this viral video? 😂 because we use our hands, ma’am ! It’s been fun to see other women that use their hands chime in their “why”, from doctors to boxers to pianists and pilots and farmers. I don’t have time or money to waste on that when I could be gardening!

Some people scroll Pinterest for recipes…
my granny just walked out to the garden.
Tomatoes on the counter, a bushel of beans in the garage, flour on the counter.
Cooking like this isn’t fancy, it’s just the way it used to be🤷🏼♀️
Turns out the old ways are still pretty special. What’s something your granny always cooked from scratch?

There’s something so amazing about this to me…
Planting carrots one spring, and harvesting them the next 🤍
Through snow, freezing weather, and quiet winter days… they wait, perfectly preserved beneath the soil.
And when you pull them up—still crisp, still sweet—it feels like such a gift.
Follow along… I’ll be sharing how I turn these into jars on the pantry shelf very soon 🥕🤍
And with canning season just around the corner… don’t forget to stock up on your lids ahead of time.
My favorite ones are from forjars, use code FARMHOUSE10 to save 🤍🫙
