At Hever Castle! At the Festival on Saturday - come say hi đđ
These gorgeous footstools can be found on one of the outside stands near marquee A at our Contemporary Craft Fair at Hever Castle. They are created by @eweniquefurniture who will be demonstrating on her stand showing how she carves the heads.
The tomb of Anne Boleynâs father, Thomas Boleyn. Near the quiet lanes surrounding Hever Castle, youâll find the tomb of Thomas Boleyn, father of Anne Boleyn â a man whose life was woven into the very fabric of Tudor ambition and tragedy. His resting place at St. Peterâs Church in Hever feels strikingly humble, a calm stone marker set in the same countryside where his family once lived, hoped, and rose to dizzying heights.
Standing before it, you feel the nearness of Hever itself â the Boleyn home just a short walk away â and the weight of a story that began in these fields long before it changed England forever. #mingotography #boleyn #hevercastle #tudorhistory #henryviii
Anne of Cleves (1515â1557) â the fourth wife of Henry VIII, and arguably the only one who won. She was chosen from a portrait by Holbein for a Protestant alliance with her brotherâs duchy; Henry took an instant dislike to her in person and the marriage was annulled after six months, unconsummated. Rather than fight it, she agreed at once â and was rewarded with a generous settlement, several estates including Hever Castle, and the honorary title of the Kingâs Beloved Sister. She kept her head, kept her wealth, outlived every one of Henryâs other wives, and died peacefully in 1557, the last of them standing. #anneofcleves #tudors #ai #positivevibes
Greetings from New York City, where weâve been walking in the footsteps of Philipâs great-grandfather, William Waldorf Astor, who built the original Waldorf Hotel in 1893, which subsequently merged with his cousinâs hotel to become the Waldorf Astoria. Iâd love to be able to slip through a wrinkle in time and meet William Waldorf himself in Manhattanâs Gilded Age, before he emigrated to England to raise his family.
As you can see from this portrait of WWA, he was a stern-looking gentleman, though he seems to me to have walked out of a novel by Henry James or Edith Wharton. His wife Mary died young - not long after the move to England - leaving William Waldorf the widowed father of four small children (one of whom died not long after her mother). Despite his austere appearance, WWA was possessed of an unusually fantastical imagination, and wrote a series of rambling gothic novels, as well as creating a number of rather more accomplished sculptures. He had a great passion for British history - hence his choice to live in Hever Castle in Kent, the Tudor childhood home of Anne Boleyn - and also believed in ghosts. Sadly, his own ghost seems as absent from his namesake hotel as it does from his English residences - so it seems unlikely Iâll have a supernatural encounter, however fleeting. Even so, I hope he might appreciate his great grandsonâs pilgrimage to the @waldorfnyc - and Iâll report back if any otherworldly presence becomes apparent tonight. But for now, Iâm sending good wishes, as always, and waving from the storied Waldorf AstoriaâŠ
