This will get you faster!!!
Pre-hill grind mode: ON 🏃♂️🔥
Drills done, legs primed, lungs ready.
It’s not just about running hills, it’s about *owning* them. ⛰️
Every rep, every stride, every burn = one step closer to the next PR.
Let the climb make you stronger, not smaller.
Save this for your next hill day and remember: the view is earned, not given. 💯

7 exercises for stronger uphill running 📈
The best way to get better at hills is running more hills. Period. BUT, these will build the strength and power to make every climb easier.
Save this for your next leg day, and let me know what exercise I left out 💪🏻

Hills are easily one of the best tools you aren’t using in your acceleration training
Hills add natural constraints that help put individuals in postures and positions that we are looking for in acceleration, in almost a dummy proof manner. Hills put individuals automatically in acceleration positions from the incline, creating better shin angles and projection. Hills also act as a natural resistance and constrains max velocity

Strength endurance — what truly matters in the mountains ❗️
It’s our ability to keep working uphill for a long time without breaking down technique or rhythm.
This is what determines who “dies” on long climbs and who keeps moving steadily forward.
For a trail runner, strength endurance must be specific, not just gym strength. Think hill repeats on terrain, incline treadmill, StairMaster, possibly with moderate weight.
The work is done under fatigue, but without going to failure! The goal is not to “destroy” the legs, but to teach the body to work for a long time under load.
A typical guideline is 20–40 minutes of total uphill work.
This can be short 3-minute intervals or longer 15–20 minute efforts it all depends on the goal and the training phase.
It’s not only about doing these sessions it’s more important to understand where and when to place them.
In one training block, strength endurance is the key focus. In another, it only needs to be maintained, not developed. In the pre-race phase, it plays a completely different role.
The same workout can either create powerful progress or interfere with recovery and fitness gains.
Everything depends on the structure of the plan.
That’s why I always say: it’s not about training more it’s about knowing why you are doing this specific session today.

Non Negotiable exercises for downhill running 📈
Like uphills, nothing beats running downhill to get the most applicable practice and adaptations. However, without proper strength training you’re selling yourself short.

If your calves start burning during hill runs or treadmill incline runs, it’s often a mechanics issue rather than pure strength.
Running uphill shifts load toward the posterior chain, especially the calves and Achilles.
But when runners lean incorrectly or shorten their stride too aggressively, the calves absorb even more load.
This usually happens when runners:
👉 push off too hard with their toes
👉 lean from the waist instead of the ankles
👉 overstride on hills
👉 increase incline too quickly
👉 lack posterior chain strength
Efficient hill running relies on shorter stride, higher cadence, and relaxed push-off.
When technique improves, runners often find hills feel dramatically easier.
Comment HILLS if your calves always burn during incline runs.

Why 100m Uphill Running Is a Secret Weapon for Runners 🏔️
Hill repeats are one of the safest and most powerful workouts you can add.
Here’s why:
1️⃣ Builds Real Strength
Running uphill increases resistance naturally.
It strengthens:
• Glutes
• Hamstrings
• Calves
• Ankles
Without heavy gym stress.
2️⃣ Improves Running Form
On hills, you:
• Shorten stride
• Increase cadence
• Land midfoot naturally
• Lean slightly forward
This teaches efficient mechanics that carry to flat races.
3️⃣ Increases Speed Without Injury Risk
Compared to flat sprints:
• Lower impact on knees
• Less braking force
• Reduced overstriding
You get speed development with lower injury risk.
4️⃣ Boosts VO₂ Max & Lactate Tolerance
Short, hard 100m hills improve:
• Power output
• Oxygen usage
• Mental toughness
How To Start:
• 6–10 reps
• Full walk-down recovery
• Focus on power, not exhaustion
• 1x per week is enough
Elite runners use hills year-round.
Beginners benefit even more.
Save this. Try it this week. Come back and tell me how your legs feel.

Here are some of my favorite uphill workouts!
What do you like to do to improve your uphill running?
Sometimes the same routine can make us feel complacent!
This outdoor hill workout gives you a perfect reset and allows you to soak up the sun as well.
Hill sprints are so effective because they combine strength training, sprint training, and conditioning all in one movement. You’re essentially sprinting against gravity, which forces your body to produce more power and recruit more muscle.
Sprints/duck walks/broad jumps/single leg jumps and back pedal this workout had our legs on fire! 🔥

THE 3 BEST HILL WORKOUTS FOR RUNNERS ⛰️🏃♂️
Simple sessions. Huge return.
1️⃣ Short power hills
• 8–10 × 8–10s sprints
• Full walk-back recovery
→ Max velocity, tendon stiffness, neuromuscular power.
2️⃣ 200m hill reps
• 2 × 8 × 200m
• Jog down recovery
• 3–5% gradient
→ Running-specific strength and economy.
3️⃣ VO₂ max hills
• 6–8 × 2–3 mins uphill
• Jog back recovery
→ Big aerobic power with less injury risk than flat speed.
Altitude training works in TWO phases 👇
Short term:
- Faster breathing
- Higher heart rate
- EPO spike
- Increased lactate tolerance
Long term:
- More red blood cells
- Higher VO₂ max
- Greater mitochondrial density
- Better oxygen delivery
Stronger endurance & resilience
Short-term stress creates long-term advantage. Start training with altitude today! 🏔️💨
