With huge bursts of fire and a chaotic stage setup, Kanye completely changed the atmosphere of the usually polished award show, leaving plenty of celebrities in the audience visibly stunned. The performance was so intense that parts of the live broadcast had to be muted because of the song’s explicit lyrics. Eric Jamal, RioLoz, Taj Austin and Ras Austin take turns over the instrumental from JID’s 2016 track “NEVER,” produced by Christo and Childish Major. The original song was later included on JID’s debut album, “The Never Story,” in 2017. Eric closes the Coast Contra performance with its fourth verse, but his experience with freestyling began years earlier. In a 2021 interview, he explained that gospel music was a major part of his childhood home and that his older brother later introduced him to artists such as Nelly, JAY-Z and Nas. Eric said he started by freestyling before beginning to write while studying at Temple University. The four members eventually came together in Los Angeles, where they lived at Apartment 505 and worked at the same restaurant, My 2 Cents. They also helped host “Cypher Sundays,” community gatherings built around music, poetry, performances and open conversations. Their shared apartment later inspired the title of Coast Contra’s debut album, “Apt. 505,” released in March 2022. The performance introduced Coast Contra to a wider audience that year.
