I did it yall!! All by myself. 🙈🙈
Recently, I switched my pharmacy to a hmong pharmacy. It was very great service! There wasn’t even a line and it’s so close to my place.
And then I needed to buy some more thread for my paj ntaub because I read the directions wrong. I used way too many strands. My mom said, “you only need 2 or 3!” Hahaha.
I almost went to an American thread store or just Michael’s, but I thought to myself…I can do much better than that.
I can go buy some thread at a hmong vendor. It’s closer and I’m getting my meds anyways. I just have to speak a little bit of hmong. 😱😱🙈🙈
And I did it!
These are the moments of reclaiming my hmongness that give me a lot of anxiety. But I know that they are just growing pains and steps towards building more confidence.
So whenever I feel discouraged or feel tempted to believe that it’s easier to not be hmong… I say the words I’ve been teaching my 2 year old son “kuv yeej ua tau!” (I can do it!).

Episode 4 | Stories of Hà Giang 💛
We never expected this H’mong grandma’s reaction.
Last video, I introduced a young boy. This episode, it’s on the other end of the age spectrum.
While stopping for a break, Pó and I met this H’mong grandma walking uphill with a woven basket on her back, on her way to chop firewood.
She greeted us with the warmest smile and stopped to chat with us through Pó, who is Hmong himself.
Before we left, Pó quietly gave her a small parting gift as a way of showing respect to an elder.
Her eyes filled with tears.
She told us no one had ever done something like that for her before.
It wasn’t about the money.
It was about feeling seen.
As we walked away, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much warmth she had shown complete strangers. She didn’t owe us a smile or her time, yet she welcomed us anyway. It’s something I’ve experienced again and again in Hà Giang - so many people have welcomed me with a warmth and generosity I’ll never forget 🥹
I’m also so grateful to have experienced Hà Giang through @xiong_po23 . Being Hmong himself, he could speak with many of the elders we met, becoming the bridge between their stories and mine.
I really hope I can go back to give more to this community 💛
