The problem in hockey development isn’t lack of information, it’s lack of clarity. Families aren’t failing because they don’t care. They’re stuck because too many decisions feel good in the moment but don’t build anything sustainable. Real development creates feedback, compounds over time, and produces outcomes you can actually measure. If you can’t explain why a decision helps your player grow — on or off the ice — it’s probably noise, not progress.
The truth about hockey development
🏒 Hockey development is not as predictable as many parents think. In Episode 51, USA Hockey’s Ken Martel explains why we simply do not know which players will separate themselves years down the road. Growth, maturity, environment, and long term development all play a major role in youth hockey success. For hockey parents navigating travel hockey and player development, this is an important reminder to focus on the process, not early labels. Episode 51 with Ken Martel. 👇 Parents

Fear shows up for everyone. The difference is what you do after it shows up. The best players don’t wait for confidence to arrive — they take action anyway. They move forward, compete, and trust their preparation, even when fear is present. That’s how growth happens. That’s how success is built. đŸŽ„ Martell Elite Fitness | Hockey Performance hockey mindset, mental toughness, athlete mindset, hockey performance, confidence under pressure, overcoming fear, hockey development, competitive mindset, hockey training, off ice hockey training, mental skills hockey, hockey growth, martell elite fitness, hockey athlete
So you want to get an edge in your hockey development or maybe you’re trying to learn new skills faster. It all starts with understanding mechanical advantage. When you build mechanical advantage, you: ✅ Get more movement with less effort (less muscular input required). ✅ Gain more balance, stability, and control. ✅ Free up attentional bandwidth to read the play and make smarter decisions. In short, mechanical advantage lets you move more efficiently so you can react faster, be more deceptive, and control the game. This is the foundation of our mechanics-first approach, the same system used by NHL players to skate faster, move smoother, and play longer without fatigue.
There are two types of confidence - short term luck and EARNED. When you put in the work, and see and feel the results, that’s the kind of confidence that lasts. We talked all about it on our podcast episode on The Six C’s of Hockey Development. #hockeypodcast #hockeyconfidence #hockeydevelopment #putinthework

Taking accountability for your hockey development is really just asking “How am I to blame for this situation?” What weakness am I running into? What gap in my knowledge or game is putting me in this situation?” And then when you focus on YOURSELF
Instead of focusing on how others are to blame Then you can actually arrive at the even more important second question
“What will I do differently now” That’s where you can have power over your career again. Because you’re only focusing on WHAT you can control
which are your OWN actions I have to repeat it because even when I was younger and I was playing Junior hockey. My ego would suddenly start blaming others. I too had to look myself in the mirror many times and have that hard convo with myself. But it’s worth it. It’s uncomfortable yes. But it’s necessary if you want to be a different player.
