“Wait… what about pollinators?!” 🤔 I get this question every single time I switch my DIY PVC dome hoop houses over to insect netting in the spring - and it’s a good one! Here’s the thing most people don’t realize 👇 A lot of what I’m growing under these covers doesn’t actually need pollinators at all. We’re talking about crops like: • Lettuce • Kale • Spinach • Cabbage • Broccoli These are all grown for their leaves (or before they flower), so pollination isn’t required to harvest them 🙌 That’s why insect netting works so well - it keeps pests out (cabbage worms!!!) without affecting my harvest. For anything that does need pollination (like squash), I’ll adjust when the time comes - either by opening things up or letting pollinators in when flowering begins 🌼🐝 But for most of what’s growing in here right now? We get this question all the time: “Why don’t you use rebar instead of PVC end caps for your PVC dome hoophouse?” Well… we’ve tried it! And yes, rebar works great for holding things in place. But the tradeoff is convenience. Our hinged lid design makes it so easy to get in and out whenever we need to check on plants, water, or harvest - no prying poles out of the ground or wrestling with stuck pipes. Once we made the switch, we never looked back! Thanks to @jamesprigioni for initial inspiration🔥Material I used for a mini-hoop house to go over a 4ftx10ft (1.2x3m) 3 - 10ft lengths of 2x3 Timber 2 - 10ft lengths of roofing batten 25mmx50mm 2 - 4ft lengths of 2x3 Timber 2 - 2ft lengths of 2x3 Timber 8 - 3m lengths of alcathene pipe 22mm thick 2-3 - Door Hinges UV Plastic sheeting 16ft x 6ft to allow for plenty of overhang (polytunnel plastic) 80mm nails/screws 40mm nails/screws Any tape (electrical tape works well) Thin Wood strips 2.4m 28ft in total (any lengths) Nails longer than the wood strips Piece of wood for ventilation Note - use stainless steel screws and hinge to allow you to easily take the hoop house off one bed and install on another bed 🌿 #hoophouse #gardenideas #gardeningtips #organicgardening #vegetablegardening #kitchengardening #polytunnel

How we built IBC tote grow beds inside our hoophouse using food-grade totes, gravel drainage, custom soil mix, rainwater catchment, and a programmable irrigation system.⁠ ⁠ We used 22 IBC totes, 9 per side as raised garden beds and 4 in the back to collect rainwater from gutters installed on the outside of the hoophouse. Each bed includes gravel for drainage, landscape fabric lining, and 2 feet of our own soil mix. The system drains out the back of the hoophouse to prevent erosion and feeds into an automated irrigation setup we wired and plumbed ourselves.⁠ ⁠ Practical and built for our climate.⁠ ⁠ #IBCToteGarden #GreenhouseGardening #Hoophouse #RainwaterHarvesting #RaisedBeds #HomesteadLife #DripIrrigation

What a crazy feeling. After gosh… I don’t even know… six months to a year of work, headaches, late nights, problem solving, and “what did we get ourselves into” moments… the giant hoop house is officially COMPLETE. Today was one of those surreal moments where you finally stand back and look at everything that’s been built over the last year and realize all of these wild projects we’ve taken on are finally coming together. The commercial kitchen, the bake studio, the farm stand growth, the animals, the expansion… all of it. It’s easy to get caught up in the exhaustion while you’re in the middle of building something, but today felt different. Today felt like one of those moments you stop and thank God for the blessings, the opportunities, and the people who have supported this crazy dream along the way. Big things are coming to Green Acres… what a blessing it’s been watching it all unfold. 🤍 #greenacresfarmaz #farmlife #itstheplacetobe #hoophouse
