Desiderius Erasmus (born October 28, 1466, Rotterdam, Burgundian Netherlands - died July 12, 1536, Basel, Switzerland) was a scholar, theologian, and writer who became one of the leading figures of Renaissance humanism. Through works such as The Praise of Folly, he promoted education, critical thinking, tolerance, and the careful study of classical and religious texts, while satirizing ignorance, superstition, and corruption.
Erasmus believed that wisdom is cultivated through learning, self-examination, and intellectual humility rather than through dogmatism or blind obedience. His writings encouraged people to think independently, question established assumptions, and pursue moral improvement through reason and understanding, suggesting that a more humane society begins with a more thoughtful and educated individual.

If the only reason you avoid harming others is because God is watching, is that morality β or obedience?
Dawkinsβ point is that morality does not require religion. We can build ethical principles through empathy, reason, philosophy, human wellbeing, and the recognition that others can suffer just as we can.
And if morality truly came directly from ancient scripture, we would have to defend every moral command written there β including many that most believers themselves reject today.
Perhaps we are not moral because religion taught us to be.
Perhaps we judge religion using moral standards we developed beyond it.

Another sneak peek for your podcast listening ears and eyes π Our episode on Humanism comes out TOMORROW ποΈ
This is such an interesting and powerful reflection on social media, something we all consume and contribute to daily (myself included ππ»ββοΈ). @jeffdauler shares his perspective on radio being the original βsocial mediaβ but a way where humans can be humans and interact with each other. The world we spend a lot of time in these days, social media, often precludes us from always doing that purely. Itβs just a reminder to still focus on human connections with those that may not be someone that is similar to us in whatever way. Itβs a reminder to keep instilling the values of humanism and connection to our children.
We are all works in progress, and love this perspective & reminderβ¦π

Richard Dawkins points to a simple observation:
Most people inherit their religion from the culture they are born into.
A child born in Saudi Arabia is likely to be Muslim.
A child born in India is likely to be Hindu.
A child born in America is likely to be Christian.
The question is:
If your beliefs would have been completely different had you been born somewhere else, what does that tell us about how religious beliefs are formed?
Agree or disagree, it's a thought-provoking question.

'Keep Christianity weird': why secular culture isn't interesting anymore.
Why are young people turning to religion? Freddy Gray speaks with broadcaster and author Justin Brierley about signs of a Christian revival in the UK, particularly among young men.
Justin says young people 'are not looking for warmed over secular humanism with a bit of God sprinkled on top': they want the strange and challenging demands of Christianity. It's that 'enchanting' feeling in churches that draws people in and feels so much more interesting than what secular culture is offering, he says.
