Sarah Flower Adams wrote the lyrics to this hymn in 1841, based on the Genesis account of the dream Jacob experienced when he was journeying to a far country to find a woman to marry from among his mother's family. In the vision, Jacob glimpses a ladder to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. Above the ladder stood God, who spoke a loving covenant on Jacob, a promise of protection, prosperity, and constant companionship.
Sarah's lyrics represent what she would have responded if she had such a dream: a desire to be ever closer to God, and to grow in intimacy with the Divine, whether her circumstances were frightening or joyful.
72 years after she wrote the song, and 65 years after her own death in 1848 at the age of 43, the hymn was reportedly played by the Titanic's brass band shortly before it sank.
