🚨 STUDENT WALKOUT OVER ICE ENDS WITH RETURN TO CLASS
What Happened:
A 41-second video circulating online shows a group of high school students, several holding Mexican flags, briefly walking out in what appears to be an anti-ICE protest. The demonstration dispersed shortly after, with reports indicating administrators intervened and warned of disciplinary consequences, including suspensions, if students did not return to class.
Why This Matters:
Student activism has increased in early 2026, with more than 20 reported school walkouts nationwide tied to immigration enforcement debates. Some districts have responded by enforcing attendance policies strictly, issuing suspensions to hundreds of students in certain cases. That response has sparked renewed discussion about the limits of student free speech during school hours.
The Legal Context:
Under the Supreme Court’s Tinker v. Des Moines decision, students retain certain free speech rights, but schools can limit expression if it disrupts the educational environment. Administrators often balance constitutional protections with attendance requirements and safety concerns.
The Bigger Picture:
Immigration enforcement remains one of the most polarizing national issues. Schools have increasingly become flashpoints for broader political debates. Supporters of stricter enforcement argue classrooms are for learning, not political organizing. Advocacy groups argue civic engagement is part of democratic development.
The Takeaway:
Walkouts can generate attention, but schools ultimately control attendance and discipline policies. The tension between activism and education policy is likely to continue.
Shred’s Take:
There is a time and place for protest. Schools exist to educate. When demonstrations interrupt instruction, administrators are going to enforce rules. Students have rights, but those rights are not unlimited inside a classroom setting.

Shortly after noon, a few hundred students walked out at Heritage E-STEM Middle School to protest ICE. While they stayed on school grounds, many carried signs and there were several chants of “No more ICE!” It lasted about 20 minutes before they headed back inside. Today, over 1000 students of Cross Keys High School in Brookhaven, GA, walked out of class and took the streets to demand an end to ICE terror! Abolish ICE!
Tomorrow, over 15 Georgia schools are set to walk out of classes in solidarity with Minnesota’s general strike and to demand ICE out of our communities for good!
Justice for Renee Nicole Good and all victims of ICE terror!

Today, I knocked on ICE’s door.
“ICE is circling the block outside my school,” my friend, a teacher, texted me earlier today.
An elementary school.
After the killing of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, I know I took a risk in tapping on ICE’s window. I urge you to please use caution when approaching ICE and do so at your own risk.
But I wanted to talk to them. I wanted to know who these masked, anonymous people are. ICE didn’t want to talk to me. They ran away rather than have a normal conversation.
Armed, masked individuals in large SUV’s with tinted windows, who refuse to identify themselves. What justifies this? These are not the “worst of the worst.” These are children, teachers, and their parents.
I’ve said it before, our schools are sacred. ICE has no right to make our schools places of fear and violence.
