AN INDIAN IN PAKISTAN… My parents were nervous when I told them where I was going. As Indian citizens, there were banned from entering. They knew the history and had heard only horror stories about being Hindu in Pakistan. But with my American passport, I could apply online for a visa. And in less than 24 hours, I was granted authorization for entry on arrival, though the actual visa would be subject to the border official’s discretion. I’m American but I’m named after Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess, a dead giveaway that I’m of Indian origin. I entered Pakistan via the Wagah border, the only way to cross between the 2 nations. There hasn’t been a flight in decades. I walked across and it felt surreal to be on the Pakistani side. I was little nervous when the border officials checked my passport. He noticed my name and he asked me if I’m Indian and why I was coming. I told him I was just a curious tourist. Both officers looked up at me and smiled, said welcome and started rattling off recommendations of what I needed to see during my trip. One stamped my passport and said that he hoped one day he would be able to see India in his lifetime. That wasn’t the last time I would hear someone say that to me. Each time I introduced myself as Lakshmi, I would see the person’s face light up with a mix of surprise and curiosity—and often a hint of sadness. I passed most of my days in #lahore, just 60 km away from Amritsar, its sister city in India. Before the bloody partition of 1947, when millions died and were uprooted, there was just one state called Punjab; one people living in one nation. As I walked around, I sometimes forgot that I wasn’t in #india. There were so many similarities—the street food, the smell of spices, the colors, the traffic, the beautiful and overwhelming chaos, the language, the love for Bollywood, the endless cups of chai. Most people assumed I was a local, but when they learned I was Indian, they usually made an extra effort to welcome me. Someone said to me, “the conflict is between the governments, not the people.
