A Moment with the Indian Pitta | Kabini
To witness an Indian Pitta is a dream every birder holds close to their heart — a jewel of the forest, painted in colours that seem borrowed from the earth itself.
Each winter, this enchanting bird journeys from the northern parts of India to the warm forests of the south. Kabini, with its rich greenery and silent wilderness, becomes a temporary home. From September to March, these forests shelter the pitta, offering safe roosts and quiet corners to rest and breed.
On this day, fate tested one such traveler. The bird had accidentally struck a glass window and lay stunned. My colleague Synudhin noticed it and called me immediately. Without a moment’s hesitation, I rushed to help — guided only by instinct, care, and respect for life.
With the help of Deepak, we gently placed the bird under a tree at the Makkeere Open Area, allowing nature to do what it does best — heal. We kept our distance, watching quietly, giving the pitta time to overcome the shock.
And then, around 5 PM, magic happened.
Right before my eyes, the Indian Pitta spread its wings and flew away into the forest. In that brief flight, I felt a deep sense of gratitude — as if the forest itself had whispered a thank you.
Moments like these stay forever. They remind us that sometimes, the greatest joy comes not from holding on but from letting go. 🐦🌿.

The moment I heard the Indian Pitta call, the excitement kicked in. We grabbed our gear and waited in camouflage for a glimpse of this shy, elusive beauty.
Although its plumage is bold, the Indian Pitta is unusually shy and secretive—more often heard than seen as it hops through leaf litter on the forest floor searching for insects.
