American film and television director, writer, and producer Lilly Wachowski sat down for a poignant and moving 1 June interview with IndieWire in which she discussed her own transition, and the courage she feels is required for trans people who come out of the closet. “Coming out of the closet — especially for trans people — you can’t hide, 90 percent, 80 percent of the time, that you’re trans. I walk into a room, and I’m trans; I’m the giant trans woman walking into the room. So there is this moment of courage that has to be mustered from the moment you leave your house and cross that threshold out into the world,” the ‘Matrix’ and ‘Bound’ co-writer and co-director reflected. Looking back at some of the struggles she faced as a closeted trans woman in press appearances for her early films, Wachowski remarked that her attitude toward openly talking about her work has completely changed since she came out. “I want to see my shadow on the ground. I want to see myself reflected in the world around me. I want to embody who I am and be out in the world. And so I don’t give a f*ck as much about what people think of me, and so I’m happy to talk about all of my sh*t now. So that’s what I do: I talk about my sh*t, and I talk about my motivation, why I do the things I do, and what my art means. Because I think that me talking about that is going to help other trans people be out in the world and have the courage to jump over that threshold,” she said.

Before The Odyssey, Robert Pattinson first worked with Benny Safdie on Good Time (2017).
