Every March, McLean Avenue in Yonkers comes alive for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the most beloved traditions in the city. The parade draws over 30,000 people each year, filling the streets with bagpipes, marching bands, Irish pride, and a whole lot of green. We asked a few locals — including Mayor Mike Spano — if they’re excited for the parade this year. As the Mayor put it: “They say everyone is Irish around St. Patrick’s Day… and that’s especially true in Yonkers.” ☘️ Are you heading to the McLean Avenue St. Paddy’s Parade on March 21?

We wear green on St. Patrick’s Day to honor Irish heritage, stemming from the 18th-century. Today, the color green represents the shamrock ☘️ Ireland’s national flower ☘️and serves as a symbol of Irish pride. As the tradition was popularized in the United States, a legend began that wearing green on the holiday would prevent a leprechaun’s pinch.💚 #stpatricksday☘️ #stpattys #stpatricks #kissmeimirish #dogsofinsta

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today we honor Irish pride, heritage, and the incredible contributions of Irish immigrants to our nation. Immigrants make California and this country great.
Before you bite my head off. OF COURSE your granny’s coarse brown is wonderful. Of course the whole grain flours she uses is a wonderful source of fibre. Today’s post isn’t intended to decide which bread is best. No. Today is about neutrality - something that is sorely lacking on social media at the moment. There’s this implication that if you choose an own brand bread, well…. You might just be stopped at the pearly gates for egregious sins in the form of UPF consumption. 🙄 Look….. if your diet consists exclusively of white bread for 75c a bag…. I think we can both agree you might not feel your best. A few slices a day for breakfast or lunch - I think you’ll be just fine! BuTfIbRe…… yeah yeah…. I get it. The moral hierarchy hits a high point when you get more fibre on board. Look - there’s fibre in all bread. Some breads have more than others. This is where fortification comes in. Some breads, like Irish Pride, have added psyllium to their mix. Great source of fibre. Other breads like Pat the Baker Wholegrain (one of my favourites for toast) has about 6.3g of fibre per 100g. That works out at about 2.4g of fibre per slice. Almost 5g for a sandwich … and then add in whatever fibre is in your filling. The SuperValu brown bread gives you 4.6g of fibre for 2 slices. SuperValu white gives you 2.8g for 2 slices. Just so you know …. That’s 10% of the daily recommended intake of fibre. Buttercrust (another favourite of mine) has 2g for every two slices. So, you see, we are attaching a moral judgement to 4g of fibre. 4g. Let that sink in for a second. Don’t let anybody tell you what bread you are or aren’t allowed to eat. If you LOVE a certain bread, get it. If you can afford a batch from an organic deli and that’s what you love - get it. If you’re trying mg to up your fibre intake, switching from white to brown may add about 2-4 g of fibre to your day. Every little helps. What other food products would you like me to cover.
St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17th, marks the death of Saint Patrick, the 5th-century patron saint of Ireland. He introduced Christianity to the island. Legend says St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity Originally in 1631 it was a religious feast day. It transformed into a, global celebration of Irish culture with green attire, and parties, influenced by Irish immigrant traditions. The first parade was in 1737. The tradition of hosting massive parades and celebrating originated in American cities like Boston (1737) and New York (1762) to celebrate Irish pride. While blue was traditionally associated with St. Patrick, green became the popular color in the 1790s.
