Have a growth mindset. New Orleans–based musician and educator Gregory Agid was one of the presenters at the Jazz Education Network conference in New Orleans earlier this year, where Jazz Road served as an associate sponsor of the event. In this session, Gregory shared advice for young musicians navigating the early stages of their careers, encouraging artists to seek mentorship, surround themselves with supportive peers, and maintain a growth mindset as they develop their craft. Jazz Road is a grant program that helps jazz artists secure financial support for touring and creative residency projects, supporting musicians as they bring jazz to communities across the country. The music biz in 3 easy steps If the music business sometimes feels like Phase 1 → Phase 3, with a big question mark in between… you’re not alone. During the Jazz Road–sponsored presentation “What They Don’t Teach You in School” at the Jazz Education Network conference earlier this year, New Orleans–based musician and educator Gregory Agid used humor to highlight a reality many artists face: Phase 2 can be the hardest part of building a career in music. That middle phase, figuring out how to tour, fund projects, and sustain a creative career, can be difficult to navigate. That’s exactly where Jazz Road aims to help. Jazz Road provides direct financial support to jazz artists through two grant programs: 🎶 Jazz Road Tours Grants help artists secure funding for tours so they can bring their music to communities across the country. 🥁 Jazz Road Creative Residencies Grants support special projects, giving artists resources to develop new ideas, collaborations, and creative work. Building a career in music can be challenging, but helping artists navigate that “Phase 2” is exactly what Jazz Road is here to do.
