We were so pleased to see Jpod in Active Pass yesterday. 🥰 J26 “Mike” popped up right next to us on shore! Check out our YouTube channel for the full video. 🎥 @r.haydenphotography SSOS 📍 Active Pass, BC 🇨🇦
BREAKING NEWS! A new calf has been discovered with J Pod! The calf was seen traveling alongside J40 Suttles and has been given the alphanumeric designation J63! As always, we remain cautiously optimistic. Calf survival rates are low within the first year, with an estimated 50% survival rate, and last year we saw the mortality of 3 newborn calves. We hope this little one grows to be healthy and strong! Last night was something special! J Pod was inbound from the north heading towards the west side of San Juan Island. One of the best places to see these magnificent creatures is at Lime Kiln Lighthouse and if you’re lucky, you might even see J pod and other Souther Residents hugging the shore. J pod is a family group of orcas that is part of the larger Southern Resident killer whale population. These orcas are known for their striking black and white markings, as well as their impressive size and intelligence. They’re also critically endangered, with only around 74 individuals left in the wild. Watching J pod from Lime Kiln Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience. But watching J pod isn’t just about the thrill of seeing these incredible creatures up close. It’s also a chance to connect with the natural world and learn more about the importance of conservation. By observing these orcas in their natural habitat, we can gain a deeper understanding of their behavior, their role in the ecosystem, and the threats they face. So if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable experience, head to Lime Kiln Lighthouse and keep your eyes peeled for J pod. You never know what kind of magic might unfold before your eyes. #wakeuptoadventure #southernresidentkillerwhales #southernresidents #srkw #Orcas #Jpod #LimeKilnLighthouse #MarineLife #WildlifeWatching #SanJuanIsland #PacificNorthwest #Conservation #EndangeredSpecies #OceanConservation #NaturePhotography #TravelWashington #ExplorePNW #AdventuresWithOrcas #EcoTourism #Sightseeing #IslandLife #WhaleWatching #OutdoorAdventure #PacificOcean #breachthedams
Cuteness overload! 🤍🖤 • Welcome to the world J63. @centerforwhaleresearch confirmed that new killer whale calf (J63) was spotted with mum, J40 (Suttles). This is J40’s first documented calf and as always with the southern resident killer whale infants, we’re cautiously optimistic! This critically endangered population of killer whales have a high mortality rate with calves but so far all reports seem positive. Thank you for keeping us updated @centerforwhaleresearch 🤍 Cover pic : @centerforwhaleresearch taken under permit • • • #srkw #jpod #blackfish #orca #freewilly #killerwhale
On March 25th all of J-Pod went down San Juan Channel and through Cattle Pass in the morning before they looped around the island into Haro Strait. 🎥 Enjoy this short clip filmed by Jason at Cattle Point, San Juan Islands. 🔗 If you'd like to watch the full video in 4K, visit our YouTube channel via the link in our bio! #orcas #jpod #southernresidentkillerwhales #sanjuanislands #killerwhale

So many members of Jpod!! The SRKW haven’t been to the south sound in many years- ever since the captures in Carr inlet. Where “Shamu” was taken after two men netted 15 whales, harpooning & killing a female- who was shamu’s mother. It is told that the calf would not leave their mothers side and was obviously forced away and captured for profit. This story is haunting to anyone, but after many experiences watching these incredible matriarchs in their home of the Salish sea- traveling many many miles a day & learning about their culture being passed down to their young- it’s indescribably painful to imagine. I am so grateful to have been able to see & follow them while they were so here! They are near and dear to so many & are a now endangered species. It was emotional seeing them return and hoping we as humans can continue making changes to deserve their trust, and further work to protect and maybe even save this endangered group. #jpod #srkw #orca #orcas #orcawhale #killerwhales #salish #salishsea #salishseaorcas #savethewhales #shamu #endangeredspecies
We're excited to welcome a new pod of friends in the Science Gallery this summer! Opening this Tuesday, June 3, Critical Distance is an augmented reality (AR) experience that follows Kiki – an eight-year-old orca – and a group of southern resident orcas known as J pod. Seen through the eyes of Kiki, this unique and immersive AR experience allows you to interact with sound waves and touch elements to learn about echolocation, noise pollution, and the daily perils facing this critically endangered pod as they navigate life in the Salish Sea. Plan your visit through the link in our bio. Critical Distance was created by Adam May and Chris Campkin and produced by @3d_vision3. This exhibit is presented by @naturecanada_, in association with the Alliance of Natural History Museums of Canada, with support from @simres.ca. #CriticalDistance #SouthernResidentKillerWhales #Orca #JPod #SalishSea #ARExperience #AugmentedReality #ARHeadset #OnlyInThePeg #ExploreMB #ManitobaMuseum #MyMBMuseum
Normally every Tuesday I go hiking with my friends, but due to the smoke, working late, and trying to figure out hikes that allow dogs; we bailed on the hike idea all together and just stayed local for a little sunset send. We headed to point defiance to try and get some sun and jump in the water, but the tide was high and there were 100’s of seals and seal pups laying right where we wanted to go. So we bailed on point defiance and headed to Titlow, one last ditch effort to get some sun and jump in the water. We got to the beach, laid out our towels and started relaxing, when one of my friends spotted the orcas off in the distance. We immediately scrambled to grab all our stuff and run down the beach towards their direction. They ended up coming towards us and we got to see them swim on by while we watched and screamed with excitement from shore. I have been wanting to see the orcas here in WA for YEARS. It was so freaking cool. It just shows that being flexible and being able to pivot plans can sometimes be just what the universe had in store for you. #wa #pnw #washington #orca #orcawhale #jpod #pnworca #orcanetwork
