When nutrient-rich currents flowing down from California reach Baja, the ocean comes alive. Baitfish gather, predators follow, and suddenly the water fills with some of the fastest hunters on the planet. This is when shortfin mako sharks arrive. Makos are the fastest sharks in the ocean, capable of bursts close to 70 km/h (43 mph). Their torpedo-shaped body, crescent tail, and partially warm-blooded physiology make them perfectly designed for speed and explosive hunting. But what many people don’t realize is how competitive they are. When several makos show up in the same space, one usually becomes dominant. Through speed, posture, and powerful passes, the strongest shark takes control of the interaction zone while the others keep their distance. Watching four makos weaving through the water, testing each other’s presence, is a reminder that the open ocean is a silent arena where speed, awareness, and confidence decide everything. ＳＥＡＳＯＮ _ ＯＰＥＮＥＲ With reports of salmon schools starting to appear along the south coast. Ryan and I headed out to see if we could find a shark or two hanging off the schools. We found some salmon with the drone and sure enough they were accompanied by a big bronzie, but we couldn't get him to follow the berley trail. This female Grey Nurse was a pleasant surprise, a few quick photos and she was safely back on her way. It was great watching her swim back out with the drone! That's the first good shark of the season for me and hopefully a few more to come! These sharks might not have the athletic speed of a Bronze Whaler but they sure do look awesome!! Ryan might have had some luck of his own....so keep an eye on his page for that! • Rod: Assassin Horizon Zero 8 - A legendary rod that needs no introduction in surfcasting for big fish! • Reel: Daiwa Saltiga 25000-P - It should be illegal for a reel to be this powerful and still be smooth like butter! • Line: Tasline Elite 80lb - It's nice knowing you can trust your line when leaning into a fish! Coastal communities around the water will forever have to find means to live, eat, and survive off of the water, regardless of the economic (upper middle, middle, lower) income status of a region. Varying degrees of regulatory, educational, and management focused programs for commercial / subsistence / recreational fishing do make real impacts, but there are still massive amount of gaps when it comes to being truly effective. This was a very humbling experience nonetheless and unfortunately kind of artful when seeing the single pilot fish lingering around its expired host.

Nearly 1,400-pound great white shark ‘Goodall’ pings near Gulf Coast as spring breakers hit the beach Sharks are on the move this spring break, as another great white has been spotted lurking in the Gulf. Goodall, a female great white measuring just over 13 feet and weighing nearly 1,400 pounds, was spotted pinging about 9 miles off the Gulf Coast near Port Richey, Florida, on March 17, according to OCEARCH. This follows several other shark pings in the Gulf from late February into March, just as many spring breakers head to the beach. Sharks, Mira, Ernst, Bella, Penny and Ripple have all recently been tracked in the Gulf. Like most sharks, Goodall now joins the pack, as the species usually heads south along the East Coast to warmer waters during winter. We’ve been tracking a mako shark tagged by the Sharks and Whales class at the University of Rhode Island six months ago. SaW2 has traveled a long way and continues to provide information about movements and habitat use of these overfished sharks. Our program at URI is recognized nationally for its scholarship and outreach for providing students with opportunities to conduct research and learn about sharks and marine conservation. Our partnership with the Guy Harvey Research Institute has been extremely successful in providing information for management of shark populations around the world. #shark #mako #makoshark #marinebiology #marineconservation
